A few skinny shrooms among the big boys
    #19494345 - 01/29/14 11:36 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

A few hours ago I posted some pics of a coir cake and rye grain cake that I'm currently fruiting with great success.
I just took a little peek and I noticed that they have grown considerably. But I also noticed that among the forest of shrooms I have growing on the coir there are some super skinny ones beginning to show.

Now, I know this has been answered before about skinny shrooms being from too little FAE but I also have lots of nice thick shrooms too.
I was wondering if this could be due to crowding and some just not being able to compete with the stronger genotypes as this is grown from a MS inoculation.

I think there's good FAE as I have an aquatic pump set on a timer appropriate for my chamber size and my chamber itself consists of a tray for the cakes and a slightly larger clear storage box flipped upside down and placed over the tray. This is stacked on 3.5" tubes to allow for FAE and height clearance.

Humidity is stable and aside from the skinny ones the crop is looking pretty healthy in my opinion.
Just wondered if this would happen due to the different genotypes fighting for nutrients or if I really have an FAE issue or other issue.

Any ideas?

I'll get a picture up soon to help

Edit - I did just find this in a post "Im guessing you either had an amazing pinset causing small skinny shrooms, or your substrate wasnt deep enough" posted by Chowder963.
I definitely reckon I had an amazing pinset because my first reaction was "that is an amazing pinset" so I'm quite sure that's a sign.
Perhaps my hunch is correct and these are just shrooms that couldn't quite beat the big boys but were determined to grow regardlessly

when you get pinsets like that the fruit size is highly dependent on available moisture/genetics so if the big guys took alot of moisture out of your sub you may end up with some skinny ones but it also may just be genetics

Yeah that was my best guess too but I wanted to be sure so thanks for confirming that for me.
I'm really impressed with this so far.

Got a couple of snaps for you. I didn't take a great deal of notice of the ratio when I first glanced and spotted them but after taking a closer look to take these pics I realised that the ratio of these skinny ones is quite small and seem to be localised. So I'm going to guess it's mostly genetics combined with the battle for water.

You can see the main example here, it's the first I spotted and the most obvious one

Some in this group are slightly skinnier indicating genetics

That real lanky one has character and I'm going to be keeping my eye on him, might even give him a name.

Actually, I will...Larry.
