Keeping mushrooms at the right temp
    #19493966 - 01/29/14 09:45 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Im ready to embark upon my first grow. However I got a temperature gauge and the room i plan to grow them in is hovering around 60 degrees which I assume is a little too cold.

I did some research into warming methods and came across the idea of placing the jars in a styrofoam cooler with jars of warm water. This seems simple and logical. But before I go ahead with it i thought i'd ask people here if thats a good idea or not.

If not whats another method of heating them without buying anything expensive?

Or better yet will the low 60s temperature not really matter?

Edit-what about just keeping the jars in a box on top of my radiator? I have a few plants on there and they dont die, catch on fire or anything like that.

That temp is not bad it will still colonize and grow, Just slower is all. On the plus side the fruits will be thick. (As in not hollow)

Edit: and the mycelium produces heat so in the end at 60 degrees it won't really matter.

Low temps have benefits, like dense fruits and very low contam rates.
The drawback is the colonization times slow as the temp drops.
It will go very slow at 60f, but it will fruit.

A Tub-in-Tub set up works really well. You basically put a few gallons of water in a plastic tote, add an aquarium heater to it and drop another plastic tote inside. The warm water from below will keep the inside of the second tote a steady temp. Most aquarium heaters are adjustable and range between 60-90 degrees. My set up cost was around 20 bucks.
