PC \ pf tek Question (water\condensation inside jars)
    #19491585 - 01/29/14 02:11 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hello ladies and gents,

I just made a small batch of brf pf tek jars (with self healing lids) and i always come with THIS problem... there seems to ALWAYS have some water that gets inside the jars... for the love of god, i have no idea how and it's driving me nuts. for one, i don't know if this is a problem or not, but i'm guessing that isn't suppose to happen... now is it water that goes in, or condensation from the inside... who knows, but either case, there's still water inside :'(

I've tried everything... cover the jars with foil, cover the jars with paper to absorb the water... etc. (the papers were soaked by the way)
-- i have a presto 23qt PC and put enough water to arrive at the 1st mark (water level) and i put 1 level of those screw lids to elevate, and  even a plate to elevate them even more!... the water level was under the plate, and the jars on the plate with no water getting to that level...

when i opened the PC the next morning the paper covering the jars was soaked and there was water on the plate (PC@ 15psi for 60 minutes)

now, is this a problem? and if it is... please, someone help me figure this out.. im a beginner, though this is the 4th time i PC up some jars and this ALWAYS happens!!  i don't see water floating\moving around in the jars, but more like water drops inside the jars on the glass walls...

as you can see on the glass walls of the jar, there are some drops here and there inside... though who knows if the substrate got more wet or not... what you guys think?

i have tyvek and rtv silicone ports on the lids, though i am worried about the "fine verm layer" getting wet... or should i not care because i have tyvek there that filters?

If you have tevek and self healing ports you shouldn't even need "dry Verm layer "
And that amount of moisture is common did you cover your tops with foil while sterilizing?

I figured I didnt need the dry vern layer, went overkill I guess but at least it cant hurt right!

Yes I covered the jars. This time with paper but I usually use foil.... so you say this is normal? Great then!

Don't use paper cut squares of foil about an inch bigger than the lids circumference All the way around press it real good against the rim of the top and you'll be fine don't use any dry verm with those lids though its not necessary and could cause hiccups in colonization times
