Colonization
    #1949003 - 09/24/03 08:03 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Is it possible to colonize a jar with a piece of crumbled cake, allowing someone to make many jars out of just one? I would think so but a really havent read anything about it. Any answers appreciated.

What about if a glovebox is used and extra precautions are taken, does anyone think then contamination would be minimized?

Put some brf in a oven bag and pc that. Then crumble up 1 cake per bag and colonize a bunch like that.

That tek is by Eatualive and he's done it many times.

assuming a glove box was used with sterile procedures, yes...then the risk of contamination would be minimized.

the method that best suits what you're wanting to do is culture innoculations, assuming you have a syringe lying around, which in this hobby, you should at some point.

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23545

i feel the culture syringe would be more effective, both in sterility and speed of colonization. no proof to back up why it is or isnt, only saying that a liquid medium injected into jars, ala spore syringe injection...would give rise to mycellium growth quicker than crumbling a piece and letting it take a foothold from there.

Thanks plenty, the technique that looks most useful in this situation is Uncle Lazlo's Syringe tek.

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/8002

Any opinions or comments. By the way, there is two fully colonized jars. What should be done with the rest of the cakes, and most of all..
WHERE DO YOU GET SYRINGES!?!?!

Those guys pretty much told you all you needed to know. I shall warn you that after several (3 or more) generations of transferring mycelium the genetics will get all screwy. You will sooner or later end up with mutants like abinos or something.

Also, you should read up more on peroxide, peroxidated grains, h2o2, etc...
