I am curious if it would be worth making my own spawn bags using a foodsaver and sealer or should I stick to bags from dealers?

I was thinking about the same.
I see two problems: how do you get autoclavable plastic bags, and how do you seal the micropore tape so it can withstand the PC?

filter bags are proving to me to be super useful. i say buy from a vendor. 7.95 for ten pack of large bags, that 1.20 a bag. another vendor sells them by the bag, @ .65 per large bag is pretty cheap (even cheaper than my ten pack), and i don't have to worry about warping in PC and no additional extra expense/modification with (for all intensive purposes) a gauruntee u will get adequate and clean GE. if u find a good "make ur own tek", share it though, i'm still interested in trying! i dunno, just thought i'd add my two cents

Haha made my day
But a friend of mine uses the resealable sandwich bags, you can get larger ones which works pretty good he gets a box of 100 for $15 and just rubs over them with a high proof alcohol

for inoculation he makes barf cakes or uses the corn tek and puts in it the bag with a bulk amount of substrate, might not be what most people do but it's working perfectly fine for him, I have used liquid culture but that has the same colonization rate as him, he puts holes at the top of the bag and every hour or so he pushes the top of the bag down towards the substrate which pushes the old air out and when it's pulled back up it brings fresh air in

hmmm. glad its working for him. i'd be scared to do something like that, putting holes at the top of the bag, unfiltered air in my apt is bad though..1 dog, 2 cats, cigarette smoke in adjacent room. for me the .65-1.20$ per large bag is worth it to not worry about all that, i have enough going on, don't wanna worry bout having to press down and pull up bags in open air, plus all the other stuff. i'd just rather leave it on shelf till done, but thats me
i would however try the bags with the plastic soda tops cut out, stuffed with poly as GE/possible inoculation port. those look like the only other safe alternative if i had to make them myself.

i use vendor bags all the time. Its my go-to for my tubs. They are more economical than jars (I can pc 20qrts worth of grain in bags in 1 PC run rather than roughly 8-10 qrts in jars).
Go with vendor bags. 100 for $50. Any bag you buy to make your own spawn bags will cost you money, and with all the work and what not to make your own, a $.50 price point on a vendor bag is far more appealing than making your own.

damn blake thats a lot of grain in one run. i can only fit maybe 10 qts total (5qts to each large bag, 2 bags side by side) in one PC run, but still beats the 7 glass qts i'd b able to do in one normal run with jars.

That's exactly my situation, I need a bigger pc. Haha.

I was just curious as to other peoples thoughts. I was most likely going to make my own bags. If I was would you sterilize first then seal the bag in a clean environment or add some kind of filter and use a syringe?

if ur making ur own bag, only seal first if ur gonna make a GE hole good enough to allow steam to escape during PC cycle. i highly recommend just spending .65 cents and buying one tho...or start with jars. ill try to find the tek where they make their own bag, it has a polyfill filter on top, the top of the bag is pulled thru top of a 2 liter bottle cap, folded over. poly stuffed in. maybe if u search google (mushroom bag culture) u can see a pic.
