Go to the library and pick up The Archaic Revival. Best introduction to McKenna imo. If the library doesn't have it (which is likely), fifteen bucks at amazon.

Believing the entire world was effected by his trip in the jungle bespeaks of a very keen mind.
"We were discussing the events of March 1971, the weirdest month of this outlaw scholar's strange life. The place was La Chorrera, Colombia, a small village in the Upper Amazon chosen as the site of a psychedelic experiment that Terence and his brother Dennis, then 25 and 21 years old respectively, were convinced would change the world as we know it. The test involved hefty doses of psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca , the local dimethyltryptamine (DMT)-laden hallucinogenic brew. If Dennis's intuitive theories involving molecule bonding and electron spin resonances were correct, their thinking went, the conjunction of the drugs and certain vocal manipulations would summon the philosopher's stone of Hermetic alchemical lore, recapture paradise, and create an interface with the "memory bank of galactic history."
His TimeWave Zero and 2012 nonsense was yet another heaping helping of crazy.
McKenna was an explorer and entertainer, but I don't see where he brought any profound insights to the table.

I think that was the greatness of Mckenna, he was a little wacky but that was the point. That was the insight he brought with him, everything is crazy, and no one has the right to say they knew fully what the situation is. He motivated people to push through the boundaries of rigid thought patterns. Everything is just a big game, we are all living in our own virtual realities constructed by our minds to make sense of our circumstance. From that understanding then, we can put the mushroom experience into context. It dissolves the geometry, or pathway in which your synapses usually take when they fire as a result of you performing the process of thinking. When this happens you essentially get to see the relativity of who you are, and the ridiculous views you may be holding. More importantly, it lays out in front of you, all the negative behaviour loops that you may be engaging in which slip beneath your everyday awareness. In this way we can perform a critique of ourselves, and from that we can improve ourselves so as to be more in tune with the people we love and care about. The best insights he had were on boundary dissolution, he held a complete understanding of that, and I think that is where his most valuable lessons lie.

Which is why McKenna and his wife, with whom he tripped together with many times, had a very nasty divorce that left him emotionally scarred.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Shit happens, it's not like being a good person will shield you from all misfortune. :P Just try to enjoy your time here and while you're here why not make it bearable for others too. After all, nothing lasts, biology/nature eventually takes back what it gives us and we all die.

This is a great suggestion. If you're in the mood for classic Terrence McKenna storytelling, though, pick up a copy of True hallucinations. In it, McKenna tells the enchanting tale of his journeys into the Amazon and even the Far East in search of mind-fucking ecstasy (i.e. ayahuasca).
p.s. He recorded it as spoken word also!

Since I've used psychedelics sparingly and never really had more than a light mushroom trip, and also because my schizophrenia is probably worsened by those drugs, my main love of McKenna lies in his talks Light Of Third Millenium Chicago and Light Of Third Millenium Austin, The Dream Awake and Starwood, which concern how we came to our current paradigm of understanding and how its fundamentals such as eschewing 'spirit' or the kind of animism we used to have in favour of untrammeled, unchecked, full steam reason and rationalism was not only just a kind of suggestion to start with, not part of some great realisation, but that this habit has made us very sick, and that in the end the world may not be what it appears to be, it may be some kind of living puzzle or conundrum as he puts it. He also points out that our culture does nothing for us as individuals, it's only for the convenience of institutions and political interests, it otherwise abuses us as individuals, cons us into seeking false happiness, causes us to do outlandish things like go to foreign countries and kill its people for our cultural interests ultimately. Culture is not our friend. He also says we should endeavour to live in a state of radical freedom, empowering ourselves and forming our own value systems based on how we see the facts to be, learning our own lessons about the nature of reality, as after all no one is smarter than you are - because even if they are, what good is their understanding doing you?
The truth lies in the present apprehension of YOUR reality, with YOUR mind, this is the channel the truth will come down, it won't be in books or announced on the news.
I really love McKenna for making all this clear and I agree with him 100%
