My first grow - PF Tek - Malaysian
    #19485820 - 01/28/14 11:39 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

My jars have been colonizing for 5 days now so I'm a little behind on posting. I'm about to start a few big projects so I wanted to document on shroomery. I wanted to try a small batch of brf cakes before I jumped to popcorn or grain  so here are my jars that I got going. I'll be starting on popcorn in 5 days and will have that posted as well. Any feedback is helpful to me because I am new to growing and I am looking to build a career with mycology.

I will continue to post pics as the cakes go into the fruiting chamber. I'm still trying to decide if I want to dunk some and case some or just dunk them all.

Also, any idea why two of my jars are just duds thus far? Is that normal?

Everything looks good from what I can see. I assume you have holes on the top of the FC too(obviously you do on the bottom or the FC wouldn't be raised)?

As for the jars with no growth, that happens sometimes. MS is a crapshoot (both with colonization and genetics).

Thanks for the replies! As for the strain, what strain would be my best bet to try next?

A cube is a cube. Most names are just from where they originated from. Choose whatever variety peaks your interest most. There's also a "strain" thread for this FYI.

I'm worried about that tub shifting off them jars. use some books, those jars will shift when you go to fan, and then you'll have perlite EVERYWHERE and fuck your cakes up.

:whathesaid:

I have the same tub bro, slide the jars in a little till they sit just inside the little lip underneath.  It makes it a lot more stable...

EDIT:  I'll put 5 bucks on that big one either taking 3 weeks along to colonize the bottom, or stalling before you get 100%

I've been thinking the big one might stall. Is there any way I can go about cutting the uncolonized part off when the growth starts to really slow down and trigger pinning. Obviously there is a major rush of contamination but I'm trying to figure out a way to do it with the least risk of contam. Any thoughts??

What you can do, and this will give you questionable end result at best, is to wait till you know it stalls, then flip the glass over, and leave it.  Don't touch it at all after the flip till it finishes and it consolidates.  Pretend it's thors hammer and is immovable.

You could also cut the uncolonized part off if you like, but i have 0 experience with this and can't say what will happen...

Thanks everyone for the support and responses! I'm going to cut and birth the big one early just so I can see how it works out. I do realize that it could very well be a waste but my curiosity is telling me to explore a little bit. I'll document the whole thing so anyone interested can see How it comes out. I'll be replacing it with a couple regular 1/2 pint jars as well just so my first crop isn't set back by my little experiment! I'll post pics.

It's not about me being anxious to get fruits, it's about experimentation and expanding in this area. Everything that I do that I normally wouldn't do shows me things I wouldn't see otherwise. There is hardly a downside to me doing this so I'm going through with it. I really appreciate all the advice though
