Having constraints in BRF Pf Tek
    #19485773 - 01/28/14 11:27 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hi!

I'm very new to this website and I'm really liking it. Me and my buddies, we wanna grow shrooms. We watched RR's video and then we checked around for supplies. We're having two problems.

1. Vermiculite we got is fine one. It seems mixture of medium grade and finer grade. It is very difficult to get a medium grade one.

2. Instead of perlite (local plant nursery didn't have perlite), we were suggested by nursery guy to buy coco coir bricks. And where I live in India, its tough to get perlite too.

Do you guys think fine verm is okay for BRF cakes? And will coco coir bed keep FC damp just like perlite? I can put 60W lamp so water can get suspended in FC. And also, does FC need to be perforated on every side? I have opaque plastic chamber with open top. I was thinking to put plastic on it. I can spray water twice every day if coco coir gets dry faster.

Can anyone give me any suggestions for me so that I don't run into any problems? I already have spores and I want to inoculate soon and feel the magic of shrooms!

Please help me if possible!

Thanks!

Fine grade is what you want for PF tek anyway.

Coir doesn't have the same use as perlite. Perlite is for placing in the bottom of a shotgun fruiting chamber and coir is a bulk substrate that you would spawn to. Shotgun needs 1/4" holes on all six sides including the top and bottom and 4-5 inches of thoroughly rinsed and drained perlite in the bottom. You want the FC raised so air can pass up through the perlite thus humidifying the FC. You can't find perlite anywhere at all?

Do a bit more research and follow the teks.

You might wanna check the Internet possibly you can just order perlite on line. If you really can't find perlite, I have heard that you can use hydroton instead but IMO the perlite would be much more suitable because it has a large surface from where the water can evaporate compared to hydroton.

Thanks for replying!

I was looking around and I found that coir is also used as growing medium in hydroponics.

http://www.hydroponics-simplified.com/hydroponic-growing-medium.html

http://www.hydroponics-simplified.com/coco-coir.html

They also mix 50/50 coco and perlite to make growing bed.

What would be your take on this?

I have found some perlite sources so I think I will go with perlite.

Thanks again for help!

I haven't found a successful grow mixing coco coir AND perlite together.  Perlite is used to maintain moisture and such in a SGFC.  Vermiculite is what you want to mix into coir.  Don't get the two mixed up.

If you have a perlite source and you want to use the SGFC than I would certainly use it and follow the tek to the T! It always worked out for me!

:whathesaid: This is what I do till I get a PC and it works great.  May take a little longer to colonize the coir but fuck if you already have patience your golden.
