When to clone
    #19485565 - 01/28/14 10:39 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys and gals. Question about cloning, and wondering what you all prefer to do.

I have a tub that had a fruit start to form and grow before I ever even opened the tub up to fruiting conditions. Would this be a really good fruit to clone? Or might that cause genetics later on that cause premature pinning on less than fully colonized subs?

Basically, how do you all choose which fruits to clone?

Choose from the fastest growing earliest fruiting clusters. Clone them when they're young as to get the youngest cell line, not when they're fully mature.

So, you would clone the fruit in my situation then?

If it started fruiting early, it's possible that indicates that the sub is contaminated. Clone it anyway and experiment. Even cloned tissue will have varying genetics, tho, so you'll want to isolate those and grow each out to find which ones present the speedy growth you're looking for.

most clone from a cluster, to get more clusters later.  u can clone that one if u want, or clone that one and one from a cluster, see which one performs better later

Was your tub fully colonized when the fruit popped up? If not, fruiting before full colonization usually points to contam in which case it would be fruiting as a last ditch effort to get fruits out before the contam takes over.

You could clone it.  Never hurts to practice.  A lot of people clone the largest fruit which is a mature fruit aand still get good results.

yea true.  also ppl clone fruits that don't produce spores to get sterile grows that don't make a mess, and u can't do that till its mature so
i only clone in vitro pins though these days!

It was arguably fully colonized. Maybe 95%. I'll keep an eye out for contams, but isn't it common for tubs to fruit when they are very close to 100%?

Either way, I may wait until I see some clusters.

This is not necessarily normal considering full colonization coupled with FAE and evaporation from the substrate are key pinning triggers.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll keep watching for contams.

I guess either way, it's generally smarter to work with a clone vs ms anyways, right? Less of a crap shoot?

Yes you do get a bit more consistent results:thumbup:

Now I'm kind of bummed that I went ahead and made 3 tubs with MS. Oh well, at least now I have a lot of options for cloning!

dude no worries!  took me 3 tubs to figure out how to get it dialed in right and now what it should look like, and figure out fan placement/speed for size/orientation of room, so its a learning experience, and next tubs u do, u will know exactly, if anything to do/change/make better. and, yea, u will have good cloning options and can take a lot of prints!

Theres no problem with MS. Sometimes you can actually get some pretty good genetics. And the variation of fruits is actually pretty interesting. You never know what they could look like. And who knows you might even get an albino or leucistic or something else interesting like mutants (atleast i find them interesting) off of it.

yea mutants are cool.  I'm still waiting for my first stem growing out of a cap.  I've gotten 2 fruits where the caps were fused at heads but have their own stem, like siamese twins.

Look at the PE6 in my gallery. A whole tray of nothing but mutants. Looks like it even has a mouth that kinda looks like its pucking out another mushroom lol
