105qt GT monotub with pictures! :) - Contaminated... FAIL!
    #19480366 - 01/27/14 08:14 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Haiii guys!

Excited to share with you all some pictures of my second monotub grow (RIP Tub #1 :frown: you will be missed).

This is 8qt of Rye spawned to 10qt of Coir and 2qt of Verm and a bit of peletized gypsum.  The spawn has a significant amount already.

Coir/Verm/Gypsum was pasteurized prior its use and all jars seemed to recover well after a last shake.  They smelled fine before I dunked the grains for 15 minutes.

It took roughly a week to stitch itself back together, before it was ready to be fruited.

One week later, and here we are!

You'll notice I recycled an old SGFC, I covered the inside with thick plastic transparent house covering. ("polytaine" in french, not sure what it could be in english)

Drilled some 1" holes, stuffed bottom tight, top loose, running a fan in the room, seems to be getting what it needs at the moment.

Hope this sums it up nicely!  I'll be updating regularly, so keep droping by!

Hey Whalechunks,

Looking good!
:prettyflyforawhiteguy:

How deep is your substrate? I ask because 8:10 is what I usually fit in a 50qt tub for a roughly 3.5" inch sub.

Looking forward to seeing the first flush!

Hey Timehole, thanks a lot!

It's roughly 3" deep, and btw it's 8:12 with the 2 verm quarts.  It's not very even though, I let it consolidate on another tub, so the bottom of this one is convex. :frown:  Have to move it around with that tub underneath, or else a flat surface is going to push the unevenen bottom up and break the substrate.

That's a monster mono! Hope it does good for you. Get you some 66qt Sterilite tubs. You'll like them better. They are much easier to dial in

I hear you brother, my other tub was 50qt, ironically it contaminated.  Let us hope nothing bad will happen to this tub.  I was thinking of putting in a divider next time so that I can at least mitigate my losses and replace tray/substrate with perlite in case of contamination on one of the sides of the tub.  8-10 jars of spawn seems like a gamble I don't want to take too often.

I cut a trashbag in two (at the seams, so that I only have one layer thick), lay it in there losely, pour spawn and bulk sub in, mix in well and make sure to get it in all the corners.  I then trim with scissors.

To be frank, the trickiest part is the trimming job, it has you trying to yield the scissors at unconventional angles.  My tip to you... just go for it, you'll get the hang of it.  This is only the second tub I do, I'm not sure if that helps.

Blow out the candles, Trash TEK the party hats, my tub got a bad case of the Trich. :frown:

Talk about a buzz kill. :frown:  Moral of the story, for grains, DO NOT USE SPORE SYRINGEs as your innoculant.

At least I have quite a few plates of agar that i'm transfering out that are starting to look half decent...  just will have to wait a bit more before being able to trip.

Just went out to get 2 smaller Sterilite tubs.  51qt each.  They seem much easier to manage.   And indeed, less of a gamble.  I'll try again with the big Tubs when I have a few successful grows under my belt.

I even have some 120qt that I'll be trying in the future.  But for now, I'm going to retreat to the petri dishes and clean up my cultures before I try again, shouldn't be very long.

It wasn't.  It was at the edges of the tub. :frown:  That blob I pointed out to you seems to be benign...

Thanks for crying with me brother, I shed a tear as I waved to the garbage man who took the now defunct slate of mycelium.

Keep me posted on your thread, I want to send those good vibes your way.

All in all, it was a good experience, not only for the fact that it's a fail, but I think next time I'll document growth privately until I actually have a flush and then share it with you guys.  Being a long time lurker, I know how much it sucks to be let down by incomplete threads where the grow contaminates, lol.

Just wondering what TEK you use for Pasteurization?

Also,
Is this your second Tub and Second tub failure? "RIP Tub #1" and now Tub #2?
And, As you did with this Tub you Dunked the Grains, did you Do the same on Tub #1?

Thanks,
I've had two tubs go to shit. I dunked Grains for Both, and I used two different Pasteurization teks. Pretty sure I Over Pasteurized / close to sterilization on one of them.

If you're getting contams before the first flush is even done the problem is your spawn. It was already bad before you started.

Precisely, in my case, my problems stemmed most likely from the contaminated spore syringe.  Self healing inoculation port with flamed needle in SAB doesn't get cleaner then that.

Also, sterilized Coir isn't a big deal, Pastywhyte got a thread going where he experimented with it, and no harm was done.  It's believed coir and verm don't have any beneficial critters on them to spare by pasteurizing, so a total critter genocide (pressure cook or temps hotter than 180) isn't a problem.

I used the stovetop jar method with thermometer. Core was temp held at 140-160C for 1 hour.
