Extremely short and fat fruits in monotub.

First flush on a monotub I have going is producing extremely small, dense, and fat fruits. I haven't changed anything from the last 5 tubs I did which produced beautifully. The only difference is the strain (KSSS). Is this purely genetics? It's almost like it's just a bunch of caps with hardly any stem. The veils are breaking on some of them and they are very hard to pick because of how small and dense they are. Should I just let them grow as big as they can get? Never seen anything like this.

They're speckled looking like they've torn through a universal veil like an Amanita Muscaria. Very strange looking. Nice pinset all the less though.

They need moisture. Pour some water over the top and around the edges of the substrate. Wait an hour or two and pour off anything that will drain back out. RR

Will do. I don't know how I'm gonna pick these things they are so dense and close together it's like I'll have to scrape them off with something.

Nah, cubes and such only have a partial veils - from the gills down to the stem. A Universal veil like the Amanita covers the entire mushroom leaving the speckled spots behind that you recognize as polka dots on Mario Bros.

Haha, they just look like the remnants of a universal veil like I said. I'm sure it's just spots of myc. A cube is a cube, ksss isn't radically different from other cubes.

In mycology, a partial veil (also called an inner veil, to differentiate it from the "outer" veil, or velum[1]) is a temporary structure of tissue found on the fruiting bodies of some basidiomycete fungi, typically agarics. Its role is to isolate and protect the developing spore-producing surface, represented by gills or tubes, found on the lower surface of the cap. A partial veil, in contrast to a universal veil, extends from the stem surface to the cap edge. The partial veil later disintegrates, once the fruiting body has matured and the spores are ready for dispersal. It might then give rise to a stem ring, or fragments attached to the stem or cap edge. In some mushrooms, both a partial veil and a universal veil may be present.[2] In the immature fruit bodies of some basidiomycete fungi, the partial veil extends from the stem surface to the cap margin and shields the gills during development, and later breaks to expose the mature gills. The presence, absence, or structure of the partial veil is an aid to identification of mushrooms.[2] Some fruit bodies may have both a universal and partial veil, others may have only one or the other, while many lack both types of veils. The partial veil may be membranous or cobwebby, and may have multiple layers. Various adjectives are commonly used to describe the texture of partial veils, such as: membranous, like a membrane; cottony, where the veil tissue is made of separate fibers that may be easily separated like a cotton ball; fibrillose, composed of thin strands and glutinous, with a slimy consistency. Some mushrooms have partial veils which are evanescent, which are so thin and delicate that they disappear after they rupture, or leave merely a faint trace on the stem known as an annular zone[3] or ring zone.[4] Others may leave a persistent annulus (ring). Occasionally, the partial veil adheres to the edge of the cap as shreds of tissue, forming an appendiculate margin. The cobweb-like, fragile partial veil of some mushrooms, especially those in the genus Cortinarius, are known as cortinas. The fibrous threads of the cortina often catch the brown spores as they drop, making them visible as fine brown streaks along the stem. Some species of Agaricus, such as Agaricus arvensis, have a partial veil that resembles a cogwheel.[6] Mycologists Alexander H. Smith and Harry D. Thiers, in their 1964 monograph on the bolete genus Suillus, proposed the term "false veil" to account for those species of Suillus that have a "conspicuous cottony roll" of tissue that originates from the cap margin (especially in young specimens) and never becomes integrated with the stem tissue.[7]

I can use google too lol: Pileus: 2–8 cm, Conic to convex, becoming broadly convex to plane in age, may retain a slight umbo, margin even, reddish-cinnamon brown when young becoming golden brown in age, viscid when moist, hygrophanous, glabrous, sometimes with white universal veil remnants decorating the cap, more or less smooth. Flesh whitish, bruising blue in age or where injured. Gills: Adnate to adnexed to sometimes seceding attachment, close, narrow to slightly wider towards the center, at first pallid to gray, becoming dark purplish to blackish in age, somewhat mottled, edges remaining whitish. Spore Print: Blueish violet Stipe: 4–15 cm long, .5–1.5 cm thick, white to yellowish in age, hollow or somewhat stuffed, the well developed veil leaves a persistent white membranous annulus whose surface usually becomes concolorous with the gills because of falling spores, bruising blue or bluish-green when injured. Taste: Farinaceous Odor: Farinaceous Microscopic features: Spores 11.5–17 x 8–11 µm, subellipsoid, basidia 4-spored but sometimes 2- or 3-, pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia present.[7

the thing is they will probly come out normal for the next flush anyway, most of the stubby"mutants"only come in on the first flush and i believe it's due to not letting the mycelium digest it's meal properly before introducing to fruiting conditions

5 quarts of WBS spawn into Damion5050 coir tek, no casing. I keep the tub in a closet that stays around 70 degrees F. with a fluorescent light on a timer for 12 hours on/off and an air purifier circulating the air. I fan and mist 3 times a day. It's always worked great in the past.
