Yeah I love that about wbs. I just lost a 5 pound bag to trich, but whatever, it cost me about 2 dollars. Haha. Like I said though, wbs is hard to mess up. I've used birdseed that I boiled too long and burst at least 50% of the grains with no problem. Just add gypsum if you can. You'll be fine without it, but it has always sped up colonization times for me.

Not as much of a myth as misinformation. Crushed up seashells provided calcium carbonate which is a base, it raises the ph. Gypsum is a buffer which prevents ph swings, but that's not why we use it in our grain jars. It prevents clumping so the grains are more airy and easier to colonize, and it provides the myc with lots of sulfur, and I think phosphorus, so it's like mycelial superfood. Run down to homedepot and pick some up, it's really cheap, like 7 dollars for a 50 pound bag. If you don't have a Home Depot or anything nearby I could always send you a baggy full. You only need a cup or so in the soak water and a pinch in every jar for it to be really helpful.

Thank you! That's why I come on these boards, and of course. If you've got any questions don't be afraid to ask me. I don't pretend to be as experience as some of the people on here, but I like to think I know what I'm doing. Good luck on your grow, I'm sure you'll do great:thumbup:

Me neither. I've always wondered why people bug out about the corn when there are popcorn teks.  Whatever. Personal preference. IME it makes no real difference.

FWIW, I have had the best luck prepping WBS the same way RR does in his videos with rye berries. I've tried a few others and so far it's the least sticky. And it's easy, so bonus.

Idk if i did it right, but i let them soak overnight, then i simmered them, not boiling.. Just simmered.

Then i drained them, let them drain for about 45 min.

Fired up the PC for 90, then let them sit.. Tell tomoro I'll inject them with gods magic and hopefully they'll colonize.

Exactly, same with sunflower seeds. It all colonizes the same and gives me the same end products. Honestly my wbs prep changes every time. Sometimes I soak if I have to wait a day to pc, sometimes I simmer and sometimes I add the seeds to already boiling water. What I've noticed does make a difference is if I simmer/boil/add to hot water or not. It allows me to get the grains much drier since the water is evaporating away. Drying the grains has always been the hardest part for me, but pouring the steaming hot grains over a windows screen on top of some towels is by far the best method.

Should be just fine:thumbup: Oh, and just a tip, don't shake the jars after you inoculate. Shake them once when you take them out of the pc, once when they reach about 30% colonization, and when you're ready to spawn.

I agree, quite a few can be hard asses, but I have to hand it to frank, he's clearly very knowledgeable but he still is a cool guy. As far as growing legends go, I think franks my favorite, talking to him feels like talking to another shroomery member, not like talking to god at the pearly gates trying to convince him not to damn you to hell for all eternity. So here's what I do, I take the pot of simmering birdseed and I pour it over a window screen in my sink. I've literally taken the screen off of my window, and broken it:facepalm3:, but now I use a separate piece of screen I bought at the store. I let the bird seed drain for a second then I lift the screen with the birdseed on top of it and place it on top of a towel. Make sure to leave the birdseed in a mound instead of spreading it out. In a mound it holds the heat better and evaporates more water than if you spread it out. Once the surface of the mound looks dry, stir it up. Do that until you can't get it any drier, it should take a couple hours and the grains will be just a little warm when you really can't get any more. A fan dramatically accelerates the process, but it isn't completely necessary. Sorry for the wall of information. Haha.

Ithink i got all that:)

Thank you for explaining, I'm saving this thread for future reference. And i like your techniques.

But just to clear this up, is your goal to ultimately get the WBS dry despite it soaking all night?

Like What consistency is your WBS before loading jars?

Cool, no problem. And yeah, you want the outside of your grains to be dry as possible. The soaking is to get the inside of your grains saturated with as much water as possible and to germinate endospores so they can be killed easier by the pc, but you want the outside of the grains to be dry. The goal is to be able to pat it with a piece of toilet paper and only have ten grains stick to it, but honestly I've never been able to get them that dry. If they feel dry to the touch, maybe a little sticky from the starch, you're golden. A little too wet won't hurt much though, as long as there's no pooling water in the bottom of the jars you'll be fine. Also they get dryer after a couple days and the mycelium has no problem with slightly wet grains. Colonization times are faster for dry grains though, so in the future try to get the outsides as dry as possible.

You can get these sweater drying screens at bed bath and beyond, too. They're made to fit in the bathtub. They're good for drying herbs, too. Drying screens beat the hell out of cookie sheets with paper towels or aluminum foil. Draining and shaking a la the RR videos beats drying on cookie sheets as well. Cookie sheets are a pain in the ass. Use what you have at your disposal. My sweater rack thing disappeared, so I drain and shake.

I dunno Sarge...Frank has his own clique. I bet I end up on his "flame page" for saying that.

But it's true, we're all nerds fighting geek wars in an Internet forum over who has the superior growing techniques, and it can get high schoolish. Dumb. And kinda sad. More shrooming, less douching! So sayeth the Buffalo.

Good luck and happy growing!:mushroom2:

I'll have to pick up some of those drying racks, they sound great! The only thing keeping me from doing 80 pounds at a time is my lack of drying space, and simmering space too of course. And I agree, some people on here just need to take a deep breath and relax sometimes. Not that I'm pointing fingers at anybody, but it doesn't take much to start a heated fight over nothing.
