Ball or Kerr jars in canada?
    #17270109 - 11/23/12 05:32 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

hi everyone, I'm slowly planning my second PF-Tek grow and I refuse to re-use the Bernardin jars that I have. it's always a hassle to get the cake out and they end up bruised or worse

I see Ball and Kerr make jars with a better shape but I can't find any in canada without paying an absurd 20-30$ shipping rates

so if you know any online canadian store that sell them or even a other brand that I could look up it' would be much appreciated.

thanks.

I am going to bump this thread, and see if you were able to find a retailer with those jars in the end (or anyone else). If not I'll try to hunt some down cause I've got my first batch in Bernardin Jars right now and I'm starting to worry about getting them out after reading all the threads on them.

Also I'd prefer not to go to Wallmart.

I'm new at this so I'll have to read up on that, I've only been researching BRF cakes in mason jars. Do they sterilize alright in the pressure cooker without melting? Anyways I'm sure there's a write up somewhere with all the directions I could find.

Yup. You can use em just like glass. Just make sure to get Zip-lock or  Glad so you know both the top and bottom are both PP5(that's the # in the little recycle triagle)

Super cheap!

We're talking a 7 pack for like 3$

I'm liking the sound of this. Do you cook them sealed? Or poke holes in the lid and cover with foil? and I'm guessing to elevate it off the bottom of the cooker or it will melt to the bottom. 1hr cook time enough?

Pretty sure that's all the questions I have.

This is how I do pp5 containers:

With RTV for self healing injection points and Tyvek for gas exchange. You can still do PF tek this way. No need for the dry verm layer without any open holes. Even with regular jars you want to elevate off of the bottom with extra jar lids or whatever. In a PC an hour is good. Steam sterilizing you want 90-120 minutes. pp5 sterilize slightly faster than glass jars.

I poked 4 holes in mine with a nail just like regular jars but not with a hammer, I used a heat source(lantern) and carefully heated the nail and melted the holes through the lid in N,S,E,W sections just like you would with glass PF tek.

When putting em in the steamer/PC you do exactly the same as you would if it was a glass jar, yes you cover with foil. Yes you keep it in the PC/steamer until cool.

you wanna keep anything you're sterilizing in a cooker of any kind out of the water and off of the pan away from the heating element at the bottom.

As for cook time, I am not 100% sure. I will prolly be cooking mine at 15 PSI for 90 minutes just like I did my glass ones. But will double check.

No offense to this guy or anything but seems like a lot of extra work that you are doing just to not have a dry verm layer.

OP if you follow this tek

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324

The only difference is use the PP5 plastics. Make sure they are a half pint wide style like this

They are a tiny bit wider instead of taller like the glass ones. and use either a twist or snap lid.

A dry verm layer is more then enough, I'd suggest using surgical micropore tape as well during the first few weeks of colonization. IF you need more GE towards the end because of stalling you can just pop the top since you have a dry verm layer.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7092472#7092472

RTV silicone and shit like that is for grain jars and reusable glass. (Even though these plastics are reusable, you don't need to over complicate it with all that crap. These are cakes we're talking about here)

a quarter inch more cake is not worth all the work put into it. Dry verm is more then enough.

Regular PF tek dry verm style works fine. These are shakeable though and can be used for more than just PF tek.

Oh I see. In that case ya that's pretty badass keeping yo shit all compatible. Seen some awesome square cakes and then using them for WBS spawn is hella legit.

What i did for my first PFtek, was just recycling any glass jars that turned up in the kitchen, pickle jars condiments etc
Then at 100% colonization just smash the glass with a hammer, becaue those usually have a narrow mouth
Still doing that, but now that i switched to grains i dont have to smash em anymore

Safeway has them in my city. Canadian tire usually has a lot of jars in stock too.

They're not "PP5" containers, they're polypropylene, or just PP. The 5 is only a recycling code.
