Too soon to pick this little guy?
    #19467543 - 01/24/14 01:04 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

This is my first ever grow / flush (so be gentle). My cakes started fruiting 3 days ago, 10 days after moving them into my chamber. The chamber sits next to a 6500K CFL for 16 hours a day (the light is off for 8/day ... is that good?).

My question today is - taking a look at these two pics (and I am sorry I didn't get the stem on the little guy in question - at this stage I am handling the cakes as little as possible) they are only a few days old and only an inch or two tall - but - it looks like the cap on the guy in the back left has opened. Does this mean the veil has broken? Or is this pretty normal? I know that's a total noob question - but I am learning as I go...

Let me know if you need additional info...

Congrats on your first grow.

Why did you roll your cakes in perlite?

Why are they sitting directly on the perlite?

What tek did you follow?

Those look mature, I would harvest them.

They are small most likely due to being waterlogged.

Give them 12 hours of light, not 16.

If the veil is broken an you can see the gills then they're ready to harvest (can't see some of them from the pics, but some are definitely ready to be plucked). Also put your lights on a 12/12 schedule. Use this schedule the whole time. indirect lighting for colonization and direct for fruiting, this helps in the development of a circadian rhythm. Also whats with the perlite on the cakes?

Yea the veil looks broken, and the ones flattening out will be jizzing spores everywhere real soon.
They look too wet, which will cause them to mature early (and small).

Ok, great info! I will rinse them off. I've been watering with distilled water. Can they be rinsed in tap water?

Yeah, my tek is still developing. I saw a video where they placed their cakes directly on the perlite, and got great results. I am "trying" a number of things. I see in other shots though, where growers place the cakes on foil. I'll do that after I rinse them off.

I wasn't sure if I was watering them too much. I spray them twice a day and spray the perlite as well to keep up the humidity.

So then, if I read this right, some of these are mature - even though they're only an inch tall ... right?

You don't need to used distilled water.
Any tap water from a municipal source is fine, and most welll water is too.

Once the veil breaks, its pretty much done growing.  I like to pick them while the cap is still slightly rounded like those

Indeed, several veils had broken. Those specimens are in the dehydrator now.  I am going to up my game, starting over, following the PF Tek vids from mushroomvideos.com. Good info there!

Thanks everyone!

If you're going to start over I don't know how many times I recommend sticking with PF tek.  It's cool for learning the process but the world of mycology is so diverse and full of the potential for creativity that once you try some other techniques you won't want to look back.  I recommend checking out monotubs.  You just cannot enjoy your hobby to the fullest until you have your first canopy of tall fat mushrooms.

The learning curve is nothing compared to what's unlocked once you truly understand what they need and how they work.  You could grow mushrooms in your toilet on a log of old toilet paper rolls if you know what you're doing.

Always start by following instructions exactly and then after that try different things so that you can compare them with your first results.  Experimenting without a control group is a time waster in general.

ALSO the problem with having the perlite like that all over the cakes is that when mushrooms are growing they don't really tend to care what's in their way, and they'll grow around it.  I've had mushrooms grow straight through polyfill and it's a bitch to get out of the tissue without major bruising and shreddedness.  What can happen when you do this with perlite is that you will encounter hard bits in your stems/caps and well, perlite isn't good for you at all, so I wouldn't recommend consuming any of it at all, much less chunks the size of what's on those cakes.  My first mushrooms were tiny like that too though, no worries there, just keep at it.
