is 60F too cold for PF fruiting?
    #19463571 - 01/23/14 05:05 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hello Folks,
Another cold spell rolled in, and my effin ghetto slum lords once again have the heat at a balmy 60F.  I was reading some other threads on PF cakes in shotgun terrariums, and it seems like 62F is chilly, but it works and tends to grow solid dense fruit.

Is 60F too cold?  I mean, I'm ok with it if it takes a bit longer.  I just don't want it to fizzle out on me now!

I have a shotgun terrarium built to spec (2" on center holes...), and standard brf/vermiculite cakes and a good 3" of perlite in the bottom.  I've been trying to keep as close to the TEKs as possible as I'm not skilled enough just yet to start varying it.

The cakes were dunked and rolled.  They experienced a rapid growth spurt and grew threw the vermiculite about 50%.  There was some aerial mycellium growth, but I think that was because I neglected to have it off the ground (I have it up about 2" from the floor now, to get air through the bottom).

Any thoughts?  Just wait and see?  I'm afraid trying to zone heat my bathroom will cause more trouble.  Thanks for any insights!

I have tried to colonize and fruit at about 63f. I can say from experience that they will go slower. Ive had jars take up to 4 weeks longer then the same culture in the summer months. One year i had to run a space heater for my tubs to do anything lol. Was crazy to see 10 days of progress in 4 once the heat finally hit them.

Fruiting is effected but not as badly, ime

It can fruit in those temps. Will be slow though.

A space heater will dry out your tubs real quick.

oil filed radiator space heater won't dry shit out.

my house has been between 60-65F the last month and my fruits are coming in just fine. everything a bit slower but it's like the difference between 10 days and 13 days big deal

yea I just re-read the OP, two inches isn't enough, set it up on pint glasses at the very least, 6 inches or more is best. Shit find/buy a milk crate and put it on top of that.

60F is too cold for fruiting.  It's fine at night, so just put your light close enough to the terrarium that you get daylight-period warming from it.

Okay I had to build an incubator.. my temps still fluctuate between 60 and 80 due to drafty conditions, poor insulation and use of kerosene heat. Doesn't help with temps in the teens day and night lately but how negatively will this affect my colonization? Should I wait for temps to warm up so I can get it steadier?

Not to the fruiting chamber yet I should have clarified. By then temps will hopefully be better. Just getting started and been trying to dial in my incubator before I inoc anything. I also have a question about the plastic pp5 can I do those with a regular pf 4 hole lid or do they have to be shaken as shown in the tek?

Thanks for the info.  I just raised it up on a wire storage shelf about 3' off the ground.  And this morning I just noticed my first pin.  A tiny little cutie shroom.  The weather isn't helping, but it's supposed to go up about 20 degrees today outside, so maybe the cold drafts and temperature around here will stop soon.  Otherwise I may need to go with an oil filled radiator and bump up the temps a few degrees.

It seems to be working--as I said, slow I can deal with, but I'd hate to have them stall out and fail on me now, after all this work, love, and money.

I know RR said it's too cold but I have evidence on the contrary, the whole month of January so far it's been about that cold in my place and everything is doing just fine.

I'm going to be fruiting at this temp as well. A lamp does add a fair bit of hear though which is p handy.
