perlite not humidifying SGFC
    #19466130 - 01/24/14 05:13 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

I made a SGFC out of a tote, with holes on all 6 sides. It does not seem to be humidified by the perlite at all, my cakes dried up.

The only thing I can think of is that there is more holes on top than the bottom and sides. Is this a problem?

You should have 1/4"(6mm) holes every 2" on all 6 sides in a grid pattern.

If your hole pattern does not represent that, this could very well be a problem.

How often are you misting/fanning the cakes?

very often, they dry out fast. I followed the criteria for the 4 sides except the bottom which i had to drill more holes for. The top still has many more holes. Should I tape some of them?

Do what you have to do to make this happen.

Might just be easier to make a new SGFC.

Is the SGFC elevated?

This is a typical new grower mistake.  Your cakes are supposed to dry out.  If they didn't, they wouldn't fruit.

What this tells is that you're not properly misting.  Even at 99% humidity, your cakes will dry out without proper misting.  Simply increase the amount of water you're spraying on the cakes.  The overspray from this keeps the perlite wet so it never dries out.

What is your perlite depth?

Hmm, interesting comment RR. They do dry fast though, within 3-4 hours they are dry.

The reason I know something is amiss is because the last grow I had 2 trays in the SGFC and one in a ziploc bag with a few holes. The ones in the SGFC came out smaller and some mutated while the one in the ziploc did great, tons of perfectly healthy mushrooms. The tray did not dry out while the ones in the SGFC yellowed over.

The SGFC is always elevated on a wire mesh surface, with 3 inches of perlite.

The SGFC will work 100% of the time. Follow the directions perfectly and there shouldn't be any issues.

Yeah I noticed that they always work. I really don't have another clear tote and they need to go in ASAP. Like I said there is more holes on top than on the bottom, should I tape some of them?

Take a look at the first link in my signature, scroll down to where it says fruiting chamber and have a read.

Good post, i'm curious as to why distilled water is bad? ive always wanted distilled water for my grows.

I think I may have figured it out. You stated that it needs clearance on all 4 sides, one side of mine is about 2-3 inches from the wall. Im going to move it and see if theres a difference.

distilled water is completely devoid of all dissolved ions etc... Being so devoid it actually absorbs ions from anything you add to it like a solvent. Whereas regular water will not leech ions and salts etc from what you add to it. Distilled water is good for adding to humidifiers and spore syringes only, and car batteries.

Good luck with the SG, brother. Keep this in mind too:

"This system also requires an ambient humidity in your house of 30% or above, which incidentally will ensure your own comfort as well. In desert climates, and especially in cold climates during the winter months, indoor humidity is often very low. If you get shocked from touching another person, or a light switch, etc., after walking across the carpet in your home, it means your humidity is too low. The answer is to run a cool mist humidifier 24/7 in your home. Moist air holds heat much better than dry air, so you'll actually lower your utility bills by doing so. If you'll ensure that the humidity in your growing room is at least 30%, this design terrarium will easily maintain 95% humidity on the inside where your mushrooms need it."

I don't use one, just food for thought.
