Invitro pin removal
    #1946652 - 09/24/03 02:37 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hi.

Three out of 5 of my PF jars are pinning invitro. I was going to make another casing tonight, however, I need at least 3 jars for my size pan. If I remove the pin(s) from the cake that has the least number and then crumble and case, will the mycelium chunks grow together properly, or will it continue to pin?

Hmmm...

My advice (even hating the idea of PF cakes) is to do this...

Get in a sterile environment, like REALLY sterile. And Get a sterile knife.

Cut all the surfaces, top, bottom, and sides, off of the cake. this is where the hyphal knots that form into pins are. About a depth of a quarter-inch give or take.

Toss it as waste.

crumble what remains. Should set you fine.

Use the same method on the other cakes that are pinning and do the same!

Are the jars colonised enough to fruit? If so just fruit them.

I would guess light is getting to them, if you cut out all the light, they should not pin.

The mycelium network will rebuild and colonize your casing medium if the temp is right.
