What Should I Name My Piano Studio?
    #19466251 - 01/24/14 06:30 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I'm just starting to teach classical piano again to beginners and intermediates... and I am thinking about creating a business Yelp account and business cards, which means I will probably have to give my "piano studio" a name.

What do you think I should name it? I don't want to name it "(My Name)'s Piano Studio," I kind of want something a little bit more creative than that.

Help me name my studio guys!!!! The future of my business depends on this. :crankey:

IDK why but I automatically thought of something dirty when I heard this name.

Why brown keys? What's the significance of that?

So far no good suggestions...

Think about the audience, guys... most of these people are probably going to be rich, snooty parents who want their kids to be musical prodigies. They aren't going to want to take lessons from a studio called "Degeneration," fml.

Based on my past students, I'd say 25% of them are Asian, the rest are rich white parents that live in gated communities and send their kids to private school.

The problem is that even if people come up with something great that you can use, this thread will probably end up being one of the top results when people google the name. Maybe you could think up some kind of clever double entendre based on music theory terminology if you like the idea of something really original.

My piano teacher when I was a kid called his business "<his last name> Music Studio". Pretty simple but it sounds professional enough. He was apparently a music teacher to a couple members of the Barenaked Ladies. He was a huge stress case though, always flipping the fuck out if he thought you didn't practice enough.

Free tips? Well uh that totally depends on what you are playing and how you are playing it.

If you're talking about things such as what to suggest, I strongly suggest every single person to start out with Canon exercises. Keep your wrists loose and bouncy, it will help your hands to flow without making your arm stiff and sore.

Piano teachers will get pissed if you didn't practice enough, because they view it as an insult, that you aren't taking piano seriously, and that you need to practice more.

Yeah that dude put me off of playing music somewhat, didn't really come back to it seriously until I was about 18. I had to have my own motivation to want to play. Expressing disapproval/disappointment at your progress is one thing but red-faced screaming sessions are another. He probably gave himself a heart attack at some point.

It's classy, has a double meaning and it's also easily stylized into a nice logo due to it's abreviation of pp.

reading music is great because the rythym is right there

with numbers you get confused as fuck
i've remembered hella shit
but it's just not the right way
you're better off remembering you own song from thin air

it's good for practice learning something new day to day though, can't beat looking at numbers and playing something off the bat lol

I like classical music, I like the brilliance that goes into it...

Just don't like the elitist characters that surround it. Most musicians are elitist and I don't like it. It's discouraging to new musicians like myself. I'm not claiming. To be the next Syd Barrett but if I was I'd find it extremely challenging to be that creative in such an elitist community where creativity is snubbed by individuals who think one way and don't want to expand.

Get over it, put your big boy pants on, and deal with it.

If you don't like that there's an expected level of standard in music, then you need to take a look around. Having high standards and expectations is what turns somebody from ordinary to brilliant.

I find it ridiculous that there are people who try to act as if there should be no set standard at all for music. I mean, CLEARLY there is a standard for everything else in life. There is a method to play golf well. There is a method to perform the ballet. There is a method to writing a good essay. There is a method to writing philosophy. So why on earth wouldn't there be a standard in music?!?!?!!?

Because to creatively express yourself you have to break free from the molding.

Violists play with a tight rigid wrist, fiddlers play loose.

Flute players tongue a ton, Irish flute players use ornaments.

No need to insult me for my desire to expand.

Sorry, I'm not insulting YOU specifically per se, my comment was moreso directed at the myriads of anti-classical music people I've met who believe that standards in music are nothing except to impose mere snobbery.

If you're being creative and creating a completely new genre, then I have no problems with you experimenting with all sorts of different sound. However if you are playing a specific genre of music, then yes, you should be expected to adhere to the standard that has been set.

I mean the simple fact that you say that different musicians play in a different style indicates that each sub-genre has its own rules and guidelines on how to play.

Within a given music tradition I think that kind of conservatism/resistance to change does serve a purpose sometimes. In Irish music there is stuff that I'll hear that was composed recently and think it just doesn't "work" or fit with the tradition or whatever. It might be too repetitive, employ too many common idioms in uninspired ways, or whatever. I might play along with people to be polite, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's not a good tune. Those reactions create conflict sometimes when people are more vocal about them, but they are part of what has ensured continuity in the tradition.

Well yes, obviously I agree with y'all there but it does create a wall between musicians that want to experiment and ones that want to play traditional or to a set standard. It's way to find folks that like to play to a certain standard but I have a feeling that prople like me who like to experiment are intermingled within other music genres.
