Cool mist H and ultrasonic Poll
    #19461942 - 01/23/14 10:53 AM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hello shroomery members, i would like to make this poll for helping all the noobs including me to find CMH (impeller) and USH that would do the work, i already searched a lot of old posts and they have broken links or discontinued Humidifiers, so i think this would be helpful.

Please tell us what brand and model you use, cool mist have to work 24/7 without integrated hygrometer (becuase it would turn off the CMH when it reaches a certain point of RH%), without filter, and also and more importantly, allowing FAE. I think is all the specs that we look for buying a CMH.

USH also are accepted but more importantly the CMH.

Also tell us what design of FC you use.

thank you

IMO green house FCs are the only ones you would want to use a humidifier in. Ultrasonic humidifiers are great for raising RH in a hurry. Cool mists are mainly good for FAE. Iv found that impellers tend to get things a bit to wet inside a GH. So I think the best bet is an ultrasonic for RH and some type of fan or air pump for FAE.

Yes i know everybody have a different configurations because the size of the Greenhouse etc, some others use both cool mist and ultrasonic, others just CMH, but what I'm looking more importantly is the names of the brands of Humidifiers you use, so me and others avoid making a mistake buying the wrong humidifiers

I don't think the brand is that important. They are all fairly similar from what iv seen. Iv used a Vicks CMH and my ultrasonic is a Zoomed reptile fogger.

I think Muda's point about not even using a humidifier in many situations  is worth highlighting.  New growers can get the impression that you need a humidifier - or even two - to grow at all.  It's not true...humidifiers aren't beneficial in many of the growing situations people find themselves in.

Well, some CMH can suddenly turn off when they detect that RH% reach a certain point and that is something i don't want for example. what model of vick you use?

The groovy whale accents are actually optional. XD Brand isn't important, but that knob on it is IMO.

Humidifiers aren't typically used these days for FCs, but some room conditions make other FCs impossible to use properly. You don't need one, normally. I do because of where my FC is.

The moisture control knob is important, as the proper setting is usually turned way down. You can turn it on max for 30 minutes or whatever to fog up the FC to simulate misting your cakes. FAE is fairly laminar, and achieved with holes and the positive air pressure. People put holes in all different places, but I put mine right at the perlite horizon opposite the air inlet.

Pumping in extra air under the perlite with an aquarium stone or something would be beneficial, but not absolutely required IMO. A low & precisely measured setting running 24/7 works well.

I dunno the brand.
It was a US. It looked like an elephant. Mist came out his nose.

The thing is that i dont want to use perlite in my FC becuase is hard to get in my town, i was thinking on making a Martha closet tek, with 1 cool mist for moisture and fresh air at the top of the martha closet 24/7 and maybe a USH with a tempo if is necessary if the Cool mist doesn't give me the necessary RH% and making some holes in the bottom (Co2 escaping holes), so Coolmist fresh air (top) would push hopefully co2 to the holes (bottom).

Well that is the design i was thinking in my mind.

if you have a PC Knock up some grain and make a mono tub. If you build a Martha. put the cool mist on the bottom. they need like five feet of head clearance to work properly. The co2 wont sink to the bottom it mixes with the air and follows air currents so there is no need to place your humidifier at the top.

The problem with automTing  terrerium is dialing it in and maintaining it.
You wind up spending just as much time if not more caring for your setup than if you had t automated it. And you have spent more money.
I had fun with it and got good results. I learned a lot.
But if your goal is to save time, this doesnt usually work.

So you would put the humidifier holes in the bottom and the co2 exits holes also in the bottom?

:/ it confuse me because i've seen GH's with the humidifiers holes in the top.

If you are using CMH you wart to put the whole humidifier on the bottom shelf of your GH. running hoses from a CMH to a FC will burn out the humidifier in no time. If you are going to plum a humidifier into a FC use an ultrasonic fogger they are actually designed to work this way. Mine came with a hose already attached. How ever an ultrasonic wont provide enough fresh air so you will need to add something like a PC fan timed to go on briefly before your humidifier goes on.

EDIT franks tek mentioned above is a good one.

But i though that impeller type CMHs would be providing also fresh air to the GH, i have seen a lot of Ghs and they dont even use a fan or anything, just the humidifiers and some holes.

Im kind of confused and limited, where i live i dont think i can get filter/wick-type humidifiers only CMHs and USHs, in Frank's Horrigans design his wick Humidifier was not able to produce enough RH% (just about 80%) even with his ultrasonic the RH would stay at 80%.

So im looking something that already worked for others, in all the GHs i have seen they always use a impeller type for FAE and RH.
If you are saying to put the Cool mist on the bottom, where should i put the ventilation holes in the top?

anyway if a computer fan is needed i will install it, or i will be opening the GH few times a day.

besides this guy already tried it and he dint get the same results as Frank Horrigans, he only got 70% RH http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19168900

Edit: what model of your vicks CMH you have?

Impellers and ultrasonics are two very different methods of creating RH. An impeller makes (large) droplets of water available for evaporation, while an ultrasonic is more along the lines of molecular dispersion & fog.

In other words ultrasonic fog will create a very local region of extremely high humidity, while impeller droplets will create a more diffuse area of humidity over a longer period of time.

FAE can be a consequence of both, depending on set up.

I used a v400 on a timer. I had an ultrasonic pond fogger on a timer inside of it. Worked really well.
