Doctors create out-of-body sensations
    #1946150 - 09/23/03 11:25 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2266740.stm

An interesting read. "Doctors say they have triggered out-of-body experiences in a female patient by stimulating her brain."

"They found that stimulating one spot - the angular gyrus in the right cortex - repeatedly caused out-of-body experiences (OBEs)."

Thought you might be interested.
Peace.

That electrical brain stimulation stuff is cool, but it has a mad scientist air to it...

I read about a doctor who was applying current to a spot on the temporal cortex and he was producing the presence of god in most of the patients he tried it on.

I wonder if they can stimulate my amygdala strongly enough to give me ptsd...

I'm tellin' you man, we're like one step away from downloading kung-fu into our brains.

MmMMm the future drugs are definatly going to be ways to manipulate our brain with electromagnetic brain waves or WHATEVER the fuck the scientific brain wave crap is. Brain waves = k3y!

Trust me,you don't want that to happen. You would feel raw fear and dysphoria so bad that it would be beyond words.

On the other hand, stimulation of the nucleus accumens and VTA would be one of the most pleasurable things one could ever experience. It would put an IV cocaine and heroin high to shame.

Yeah,I think mapping the brain electrically would be an enormous help in understanding human consciousness.

If you think about, drugs do the same thing, but in an indirect way. They create action potentials across synapses and mess around with the brain's electricity.

Leary always said that electrical stimulation would one day replace drugs as a way to alter consciousness.

lol  i was goofing with that ptsd remark.

oooo :ooo:, direct stimulation of the pleasure pathways...too bad they are deep in the brain or i would save up the money (i wouldnt care how much it is, or how long it would take, i would save up)  just so that i could get that stimulated.

People should start doing that with the god experience in the temporal lobe. I mean what do they do, just put on some topical anesthetic and dig in? im sure there are risks, but a skilled  neurosugeon will keep things in control. It would be interesting to say the least.

Ahhh, can't wait until I can plug my head into the wall and vibe off of 220 volts of electricity.... or plug my bass guitar into my head and reprogram it by hitting different frequencies and notes..

This is interesting stuff, man!
Peace.

A random inchoherent thought: Why mess with applying directly electric current on the brain? That would need direct access of the electrodes in the brain region you want to stimulate, which is literally shoving electrodes in your brain.Try google searching Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Just coils.....

"That electrical brain stimulation stuff is cool, but it has a mad scientist air to it... "

People used to think surgery of any kind was playing god, now it's socially acceptable. I think it's just a matter of time before people have no problem accepting brain upgrades and modifications.

> Yeah,I think mapping the brain electrically would be an enormous help in understanding human consciousness

They have done an experiment to try and map consciousness in the mind. The setup had a person wearing colored glasses with red in one lens and green in the other. They would then show red verticle lines or green horizontal lines on a screen. The person watching the screen will see either horizontal lines, or verticle lines, but not both at the same time. Nothing on the screen changes, but the person with the glasses will see the lines switch between verticle and horizontal depending upon which side of the brain is active. (Each eye can only see one set of lines because of the colored lenses. The signals from the eyes go to seperate and opposite sides of the brain.)

When hooked up to a machine that can record what part of the brain is active, and hooked up to a switch so that the person can indicate which direction the lines go, they were able to trace what part of the brain was active or conscious of the lines switching. The end result was something that looked like a flame that quickly cycles around brain, but never stops.

That's not really mapping conciousness, that's just mapping which parts of the brain are active when attempting to perform a certain task. They've done hundreds of similar experiments, a friend of my family is actually a scientist at the university near here who has done a few experiments that involve observing brain activity.

They already invented that, it's called LSD.
