A quick question about tap water and dowels.* Another water question*

Should I boil the water first to get rid of any chlorine before I use that water to soak my dowels?
Thanks folks.

I was just discussing tap water with a composting expert the other day. She says that now municipal water is/has been using a different chlorine application method and you can no longer just let tap water sit for 24 hours to gas off the chlorine. We were talking about making compote tea. She said the only way to truly dechlorinate municipal tap water is to add a dechlorinate, like you would get from the pet store for aquariums. I used the same thing for my Aquappnics system, but also let water sit for days.
As for making dowels, I don't think the water will effect you to much, as I believe mycelium is not killed by chlorine, just spores. But don't quote me. I've never made dowels myself, but I guess if you wanted to be 100% safe get a $5 bottle of dechlorinate or use distiller water?

Well bugger all.
I put the dowels in the water already. I am sure it will be fine.
I should start using distilled water for my agar though.

Several municipal water systems are now using chloramine instead of chlorine. Unfortunately, the chloramine doesn't dissipate like chlorine. I am lucky that our municipal water still uses chlorine...for the time being. They just had minutes where the council was discussing a major update to the water system due to new standards. I imagine that our treatment may change when that happens. You should be able to call your water supplier and ask if they use chloramine or chlorine to treat the water. I found our municipal water reports online.
Time to build a rain barrel I guess.

Though expensive, a fast reverse osmosis system(.5gal/min+) with UV filtration, has been one of the best all around investments ive made(I have had it for over 5 years). It obviously gets rid of your chlorine problems as well as many others.

Mushroom mycelium isn't affected by dilute chlorine. Soaking dowels will be absolutely fine.

I did some calculations and wanted to share them.
The average for 10 dry dowels is 7.22g For hydrated it is 12.6 grams.
So that works out to be 0.54mL/g of water per dowel.
I am going to try putting this amount of water in a jar with dowels and PC them. Just to see if I can skip the soak step.
Ill let yall know.

If there is not residual water in the bottom of the jar Ill be able to tell if the water escaped the jar or went into the dowels by checking the average weights.

I should know in a couple of hours.

Maybe put a tiny bit extra water in there in case of evaporation?

The average weight of ten dowels unsoaked and PC'd was 12.4g
I think we have a winner. I will try larger quantities maybe tomorrow.
I don't know if that variance is statistically significant or not.
It is a very small change. Ill have to repeat the process a few more times but it seems to work.

Just to clarify I PC'd 100 dowels with the 54g of water.
I then weighed random groups of ten of those 100 dowels till I had ten different numbers and took the average of those.

Glad you like it Jeff.
