yep just put them in a fruiting chamber w/o the dunk, bacteria thrive when the sub is at field capacity and mold usually follows but if you just cut back on misting it say to twice a day it should be fine, could probly dunk it once hyphal knots start to show

If they smell (like eggs, dirty socks, or apples) throw them out.  Though bacteria is not an "end-all" it invites other contamination by weakening the mycelium.  Id wager that IF you have a bacterial cake and you spawn it, it will do nothing but contaminate fully in short time.  Get yourself the correct jars and try again before you waste too much more time....Again, just my observation from quite a few of my own attempts with the wrong jars (Same sized ones you have).  The tek calls for the wide mouth half pint for a number of reasons.  You probably could use some of the PP5 plastic containers also.  Short and stout jars will do much much better than tall jars every time.  If you insist on using the jars you have, you will continue to have less than satisfactory results.

If you want to chuck one, chuck it in your yard and bury it.

I think i might start overgrowing the neighborhood with spent cakes....

Question about next batch.... I can't find any smaller jars in half pint. I found wide mouth jars but the jar is a square and the opening is a circle that is smaller the the rest of the jar. I found 4oz jars that would work but I feel like those are too small. Help me haha

1. Buy a PC and move up to grains with quart jars.

2. Use the short stout ones and spawn to bulk since the cake will have to be broken anyways.

3. Look in a different store till you find the right ones.

4. Use the same ones you have now but up the verm a little bit. Then DO NOT HANDLE THEM during colonization

I'm sure you could.

Why no bulk you can even do bulk cakes and fruit them in the SGFC.

Idk I just thought the 4oz was too small and the bulk takes longer I would assume, I'm only on my first grow.

The 1/4th pint jars are too small but will work in a pinch.  I have had "luck" with them...they are not heavy producers.  You could stack one atop the other, but most likely you would only get fruits from the bottom half of the stack due to gravity pulling water downward.

My opinion:

Go on down to the local grocery store and look for Glad or Ziplock Plastic PP5 containers.  You can find them in all sorts of sizes.  I myself did not find the proper wide mouth jars till long after I got frustrated with failure contributed to the wrong jars.

As you hunt for jars a few measurements to keep in mind:

Half pint = 8 oz = one cup

You need jars that do not have a shoulder.

Another option would be to visit a thrift shop and to try and find glasses that have the right size/shape and just use a tin-foil lid.  Though it seems ghetto (it is) it works.

I cannot say for sure, but glad and ziplock make a 2 cup screw top pp5 that may work for pf-tek.

There are more than a few places that supply the proper jars on the internet, but as I found out shipping costs are unreasonable IMHO.  See if a local store that stocks ball jars can order you a case (dozen) 1/2 pint wide mouth no-shoulder jars.  If they ask questions, tell them that you are making jelly in the spring and want to be ready or some other bs.

If your doing brf cakes - stick to the half pint widemouth jars. The 1/4 pint jars are too small and pint jars too big.

I've got a bunch of the pp5 containers as well that I use for brf cakes, but I use self sealing RTV injection points and Tyvek gas exchange port and no dry verm layer with them. (Not as easy to drill a small clean hole through the top)

They do seem to be a bit harder to find sometimes. You can either find some PP5 containers or order the widemouth jars if you cant find them locally.

No that's incorrect they take about the same time. I might be incorrect but when spawning brf cakes for bulk you do not have to allow the one week consolidation.  If that's the case then instead of that week of consolidating you will be colonizing your bulk cake. If that is not correct then yea straight BRF cakes would be best for you.

I do know with grains, they take about the same time as a BRF cake, but yield is alot more.

Also as they have said look for the zip lock twist tops those will probably be your best bet until you find the right jars.

Spawning to bulk will take a little longer, but if you have one sub colonizing while the other is fruiting it doesn't matter too much. It doesn't hurt to get a few grows under you before you go to bulk. By then then you tend to understand the steps better. Not everybody wants to go to bulk. Some are only looking for the small personal amounts that cakes can provide.

My cakes always took almost 1.5mo. Where my bulk is done in a month.

Yea I suppose you are right but I still don't understand why someone wouldn't want to move up to bulk. Its a hell of alot more fun. It looks cooler and the feeling you get from seeing that beautiful forest of shrooms is just :Awemazing::aweyeah:
