So... Was the war in Iraq a good thing or a bad thing?
    #1945512 - 09/23/03 08:08 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Specifically, will Iraq be better off now than if we had not removed Saddam?

That is the question.

In the long run it may be a good thing for Iraq.

It's a disaster for the US though.

This isn't a "yes" or "no" question.

Don't you think it's a bit early to tell?

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Well, I imagine if you were able to ask all the Iraqis, they'd say they are better off with Saddam gone. I tend to agree.

I imagine those who sell wood-chippers may disagree.

They're probably better off without Saddam, but even in that case, I think it's too early to tell. We'll have to see what kind of government they set up. I think it's an economic and foreign-relations disaster for the US, but I can't say I'd expect any better from Bush & Co.

Presuming "Iraq" in the question refers to Iraqi citizens generically, the answer is yes. Certain Ba'athists and Ba'athist supporters and collaborators must be excepted.

the food for oil scandle is a good enough reason to invade alone.

Why do we kill people who are killing people to show that killing people is wrong? ~Holly Near

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. ~John Stewart Mill

the war cannot be won either..for the following reasons ..a real "stable..democratic" iraqi govt would not necessarily be pro-US/pro-neocon.. and the alternative is a permanent occupation/war..under which iraq will continue to be worse off than under saddam...and i should also remind of michael moores' infamous axiom that "the war is no meant to be won...it is meant to be continuous"...
