Renters Rights

I came home for from work today at lunchtime and saw an envelope in front of my door and in front of everyone elses door that lives in my apartment building. Once inside I opened it to find something terribly wrong. It was a letter from my landlord.(A little background info-Last Thursday two people in my building got in a pretty nasty fight outside and the cops showed up. Somehow one guy got busted for having a bunch of illegal Mexicans in his apartment, apparently living there. The other guy somehow got busted having around 6 pounds of weed.) This letter states that due to recent activities, beginning the week of September 29-October 31 the landlord and local police will be tightening up watch and security in the apartment building, adding such measures as random apartment inspections and police canine walkthroughs. It says they are looking for any activity that would be cause for eviction or arrest including unauthorized occupants, illegal drug activity ect, ect. I thought to myself thats a bunch of shit and they have no right to do that. Then I read on. It said to please refer to para 8 of your lease which states the owner or anyone authorized by him may enter your apartment without your authorization if the need arises, or something along those lines I don't have the actual letter with me. Not that I have anything to worry about, its just that I find this a complete disregard for privacy and basically a slap in the face as far as respect is concern

As a landlord I can tell you most states use that statement to authorize emergency entry, such as broken pipes, fire, and the like. I know of no state that allows random searches. Consult a lawyer, legal aid, or perhaps do a bit of online research.

there should be an organization in your are that promotes renter's rights... Like Emergency Housing Crisis Center or a similar organization. I would call them to make sure there arent laws in your state or country that prevent shit like this...
What really sucks is that since its a part of your lease they are prolly gonna get away with it... and most apartments use the same standard lease, so its not like you really have any choice in the matter.
Anyway, see what your options are, try to find a group that will help you out. If you have no other options, then move, and bitch the leasing office out for treating you like children and violating your right to privacy.
god damn that really pisses me off.

Transport all illegal activity and substances elsewhere for the time they specified.

" In every residential lease (oral or written) a tenant has an implied right to peaceable, quiet enjoyment of the premises. A tenant also has a right of privacy in his own home. A landlord should not violate either of these rights by entering without the tenant's permission or before giving advance notice, regardless of what the lease says. "
Found this on one of the links I posted.
This only applies to my state, but I'm fairly sure most states have a similar provision in their laws

Yes, renters have pretty much the same rights as homeowner (except the right to sell). This is a clear violation of your privacy rights. If I were you I'd raise holy hell!

That's complete bulshit. Even if they did find something in your house without probable cause, I totally doubt if that shit would hold up in court. Remember you have rights ....Use them

?I had the right to go in the apartments as long as I gave the residents 24-hour notice prior to the search,? Fletcher said.
24 hours notice TO ENTER is allowed. This is for inspections for visible damage, not for searches of the tenants private property. In other words, they can look for holes in the wall and such, but they can't dig around in your dresser drawers.
Clauses in a lease which are in conflict with state law, will not be upheld in court.
And while the landlord or his representative may be covered by the 24 hour notice, the police are not.
