To buy or not to buy?
    #1944716 - 09/23/03 02:18 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

(I apologize in advance if i should UTFSE but didnt know what to search for without bringing up too many results)

Just how much more effective is using a pressure cooker than trying to boil it with an inch of water? Is the contamination rate that much greater even if you do it for a long time? Time isnt really much of a factor since i dont plan to do more that 2-3 jars.

Any responses or links much appreciated.

The PF Tek using brown rice flower works fine with simple steam sterilization. If you're using grains, you really do need a pressure cooker, though.

a pressure cooker is needed if you plan on sterilizing grain or agar. unless you live at ridiculous altitude, you can sterilize PF substrate without a pressure cooker.

than trying to boil it with an inch of water?

you are aware that a pressure cooker also operates with water in it, right?

a PC is cheap... but indespensible if you're at all serious about this hobby. i got my PC for 30 bucks at walmart... it's probably the best investment i've made yet as far as growing supplies go.

unless you're just tinkering around with a few PF jars, you'll need a PC.

is 5565 feet a ridiculus altitude? i think water boils at about 202 up here.

i would buy a pressure cooker if i were you, even to do simple PF jars. it may be unecessary... i really don't know (there's not exactly alot of research done on this subject)... but i'd get one anyway. they aren't that expensive at all.

the main difference is that water boils at 100 degrees centigrade at sea level.
at 1 atmosphere (15 psi) it boils at 120 degrees centigrade.
