Electric Pressure Cookers/Sterilizers?
    #19442476 - 01/19/14 01:06 PM (11 years, 19 minutes ago)

I donated my old Presto and AA cookers to newbies in the field some time ago.

The biggest annoyance with them, for me, was having to fit them on my stove (small kitchen in the studio) and leaving them there for 90 minutes (plus the time to actually get to pressure).  Too much heat, too much time.

I found these: http://www.allamericancanner.com/elecsterilizer.htm and love the idea.

Just wondering if there are any cheaper (but still reliable) alternatives that you guys may know of before I invest that amount of money.
...or maybe some sort of stand for a normal AA cooker that will allow me to perform my sterilization in another room?

The x75 is going to be my next big expenditure. Its crazy expensive but looks well worth it. If you want something cheaper you could always put a PC on a hot plate.

you could always buy a propane stove and do your PC'ing outside or in a garage.

:whathesaid:  but i would read the owner's manual because i know when i got mine it specifically said don't use on a propane burner of more than 12,000 BTU's or something along those lines.

Don't use above 12000 BTU's or the pot will melt.  It probably won't, but it could.  You don't want to risk that thing exploding at 15psi.  It would take off like a rocket.

I PC on my barbeque burner (and my barbeque is hooked up to natural gas from my house).  Natural gas is cheap.

Two triple burners are the way to go, but this is a good start!

Honestly I just use the propane on the porch to get it up to steam. Them I bring it inside and put it on the stovetop cause it is big enough to fit under 2 gas burners

the cheapest way to go is a 23qt presto on a 1200w or higher
hotplate it works for plenty shroomerites

search for a first hand account that recommends
a specific model of hotplate if you want to

I look at it like this. My reloading manual says "such and such" a round can only handle this much pressure for a given gunpowder, that means that you slowly work up to that pressure, not down from it (possible death).

If I bought a propane unit that says it puts out 15,000 BTU's to use for my PC that warns against anything above 12,000, I just wouldn't turn it up past 1/2 to 3/4 on the dial. You would get used to how it runs pretty quickly.

If I had a Maserati...you get the idea.

I would not worry about it unless it is a huge difference where you can't turn it down low enough to maintain 15 PSI (or 17 to 20 for a sterilizer).

My 15 Qt Sterilizers running a batch of agar has to be turned all the way down on my stove top and it still won't go below 17 PSI. With grains it's a little different because of the mass being heated up. It runs at 15 PSI on the lowest setting with grains.

Buy one you think will work and test it out.

Don't worry about "melting" the bottom out unless it runs out of water. That would be impossible on the scale we are talking about here.

I like the idea of heating it up outside on propane and then bringing it in for the timed pressure stage except my 941 won't fit on my stove top below the exhaust hood.

What is the difference between 25X/50X/75X?  I'm not sure I'm able to see it.

Outside is not an option and I don't have a garage.

I'd feel too unsafe having that setup indoors.. plus, not many places to store it.

Doesn't sound like *too* bad an idea.. but considering I'm not all that strapped for cash and putting up with two appliances is more of a hassle than one I may just go for the big purchase.

The 75x is the biggest. Without the liner it can hold 16 quarts, with the liner it can do 12.

The 25x and 50x are the same size, one just heats up faster.  The 75x is a lot bigger.
