check more than that man..
seriously take a trusted friend to give another set of eyes with ya.
and dont always feel like you have to buy it just cause your there.
remember.. when negotiations arise if you choose to go down that route.. remember something is always going to need to be fixed.. ALWAYS.
the jeep i pictured there as it sits i only have 1900 usd wrapped up into it as it sits man. thats with a 3 in lift 31 in tires, the rims, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, plugs wires, dizzy, etc the list goes on.
my point being is you can get a deal.. they are out there just be diligent and do your homework.

ill have someone coming with me
ive checked through nissan suburu holden bmw
ideally i want it to look good (with wheels / exhaust) as id want to spend the money to mod a car without it.
if i were prepared for a 6cylinder id have more options, i had a 6cyl once before and fuel on my budget was a PITA

4 cylinder , automatic
is this worth pursuing?
Is there a Craigslist Australia you can comb through? A lot of times the sellers are naive and do not know what there car is worth.
Also - A car is probably the single worst investment you can make. Go for a point A to point B (honda or toyota last the longest with the least amount of maintenance imo)- unless you have an amazing job and a lot of money in the bank to burn. Don't spend over $3500 AUS.
...I went to the auction yesterday and got a lifted 2004 F250 Super Duty (FX4) for $3700. (The bidding stopped at $3150 but the seller countered at $3500 + $200 in auction fees). Leather interior. It does have higher miles, about 170k.
This is just a generic pic, but it looks like this, just not as clean:

I looked at the link you gave and the last vehicle on the first page when you choose 7500 as max is a Subaru Forester. It has a turbo hood on it so I assume it is a turbo, meaning it has a motor that is like mine. Mine is a little bigger plus bigger turbo that I put on, but it will be ridiculously fun to drive. It doesn't look like much, but search google for modified 2001 subaru foresters to get you an idea.
Here's one. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6069/6023448092_2dfb9b09e1_m.jpg
They can be done up really nice. Heck I was considering buying that exact model before I decided to go back to jeep.
It does have high mileage, so expect some maintenance, but it really isn't that bad on a subaru. I can get an engine out of one in three hours. Just make sure it wasn't owned by some 16 year old that beat the crap out of it. Research will be your best friend in any car purchase.

Buying a car with aftermarket wheels and exhaust pretty much guarantees that you're going to end up with some boy racer's old toy (ie driven hard).
Ideally you want a bone stock car that was owned by some old lady who only used it to go to church on Sunday.

It looked like he meant to type "I don't", but it came out as "Id". I might have read it wrong too, though.

All Audi A4 4-cyl in America were 1.8 turbo motors for that year, are they different in Australia? I couldn't find any info on a quick search.
Edit: Nevermind looks like you have a lot of different choices for motors.

I wanted an early 2000s Audi too, but glad I didn't. When I do buy one, I won't be worried about the money.
Would it be better to lease a new Audi as far as money goes?

Audi supposedly has decent deals where the maintenance is free for the first couple years, so you wouldn't have to worry about that. Leasing is a hard decision. It all depends on the contract. They will nit pick you for every little scratch, dent, detail charge, upkeep charge, etc, etc, at the end of the lease plus mileage if you go over. Although, it is an Audi. My mom was trading hers in on a lease (Audi TT) for a Lexus a year before her lease was up. Lexus didn't really care that they had to buy the lease out. They practically begged her to take their car, and I personally beat the shit out of that little TT before it had to go. Still the best awd system at high speeds I've ever driven.

I met up with the owner of the A4 and took it for a test drive.
We negotiated a price of $6750 (down from 7500) , we didn't buy the car on the spot as we wanted a roadworthy certificate included. During this time someone else bought it
I tried to meet with the owner of the Suburu Impreza but he wasn't available.
A4 was nice to sit in, not as much room as the A6 inside and not the same size length wise.
