Grow Log: P.Cubensis B+. WBS-> Coir (Pics Attached!) Original Topic: Tyvek substitues
    #19212717 - 12/01/13 01:25 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am based in Asia. I am simple unable to source tyvek online/offline. Every grain spawn tek I have come across, uses tyvek.
Can someone recommend me a substitute? Will polyfill work?
I read the board multiple times, but each tyvek substitute thread eventually ended up in a separate debate, which didn't answer the original question.

Thanks for the help

That really depends on what you intend to use it for.  Would you please elaborate?

Sorry, I forgot the purpose.

I was planning to do a grain spawn (millets in quart jars with p.cubensis spores)

Polyfill works fine for grain jars

Yes, you can successfully use polyfill to provide sterile GE for a grain jar.

I used pillow polyfill, and the coir colonized completely. I just dialed in my tub. Pics attached. I will attach more pics soon. (can those white spots be hyphal knots?)

Well, polyfill seems to have done the job. I just dialed in my monotub yesterday. I am seeing white dots all over - but not sure if these will pin or whatever. I guess patience is what I need to employ here - something I sorely lack :|

Same here, we dont have tyvek, where did u use polyfill successfully? U mean covering the lid hole?

Yep.
I made 5 holes in total:
(1) I made a 0.75cm diameter hole right at the centre,
(2) I made 4 needle-sized holes symmetrically around it (~1.5 cm away from the center hole, and ~1cm from the rim)
(3) I closed the 4 needle sized holes with micropore tek.
(4) For the center hole - that's where the polyfill came in. I took some polyfill, rolled it up and shoved it through the hole. As long as the hole is really "tightly" fitted in by the polyfill, it should work.
I covered the lid with a double aluminium foil layer during PC sterilization.

I inoculated through the 4 holes, and covered them again with micropore tek.

The polyfill should look like this: http://www.fungifun.org/English/Polyfil
The hole configuration is like this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10888743

Nope, those won't pin.  It's just a little bit of aerial mycelium.

Not to worry, though.  That looks like a very healthy tub, and I'd expect to see primordia at some point between 4-13 days from now.  When you see them, they'll be much whiter, much smaller and unmistakeable.  You won't have to ask.  I think you'll find Tmethyl's thread on how it should and shouldn't look to be very helpful in the meantime.

So I have tons of pins. I will post pics soon. Two quick questions:
(1) I had more pins on the sides so I tightened the polyfill a little - please let me know if this is a good strategy
(2) A few side pins are fully grown almost - should I harvest these (the cap has begun to expand)

I also want to take a print and clone. This has been such a great success

Will post pics tomorrow.

Nope.  That will reduce pinset across the board, not just on the sides, and it'll lead to deformities like fuzzy feet and spaghetti-stalk mushrooms.  You don't want that.

Harvest them when it looks like the veil is about to tear, or when you start seeing a few spores on the stipe of the mushroom.  Just before they do so the color will change from brown to tan, and the shape of the cap will change.
