Chef Arrested While Picking Mushrooms
Police Find Man On School Property With Gun

POSTED: 12:03 p.m. EDT September 23, 2003
UPDATED: 12:12 p.m. EDT September 23, 2003

LITCHFIELD, Conn. -- A Bantam man was arrested while picking mushrooms Monday.

Police said they are trying to figure out why George Skrehota needed a gun to pick the wild mushrooms near a school.

Skrehota is chef and owner of The Bantam Inn Restaurant. He said he has done it for years.

Teachers reported a suspicious man walking around school grounds. Police questioned and searched Skrehota and found a loaded .22 Derringer in his pocket.

"They asked me what I was doing. I told them, 'picking mushrooms,'" Skrehota said. "They could see I was picking mushrooms. I have a state permit for my gun and it's just a little .22 thing. It has five tiny little bullets."

He called it an "unlawful arrest," insisting that he can carry his gun anywhere in Connecticut.

State law forbids firearms or other deadly weapons on school grounds.

Skrehota said he will fight the charges and promised to continue picking mushrooms on school property.

"It's public property, and I pay $8,000 a year in taxes, so I'm going to pick mushrooms there again, you better believe it," he said. "Where's freedom in this country when I can be arrested for picking mushrooms?"

Skrehota is scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court Oct. 6.

Yep, and five tiny bullets can end five tiny lives. The .22 caliber bullet is responsible for more gunshot deaths in the US than any other bullet size.

I could see him being worried about wild animals or something. I have no issue with that. The quotes of him talking about the gun, however, sounded like somebody that does not respect the killing power of their weapon.

You would think he'd be smart enough to know that if anyone gets suspicious and calls police on him, they'd find the gun.

come on .22 it doesn't get any smaller than that. Sure it can kill people at swimming pools but anyone smart enough to wear a sweater would be fine.

It is exactly this attitude that grants the .22 bullet the title of most lethal in the US. Sure, a .22 is does not have the punch of a .308 (nato 7.68mm), but it will go through a sweater, it will go the skull, and it will kill.

Yeah,it's only a 22,let me shoot you with one.

It should get in trouble for carrying a concealed weapon if he broke the law,but the punishment should fit the crime-if he was near the edge of school property and doesn't have a record,he should only get community service or something like that.
