Mold INSIDE the stem? (with pic)
    #1944059 - 09/23/03 01:23 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

After breaking the stems of his fresh mushrooms (Mazatapec) in two halves, a friend discovered a suspicious looking fuzz inside the stem. All of the mushrooms from this flush showed this phenomenon to some degree. He sent me a picture an asks whether this is some normal mycelium or a really sly form of contamination. The casing layer shows no definite sign of mold, but my friend is quite inexperienced in the art of mushroom cultivation, so he might just have overlooked something.

No, it's bright white. The green part is the mushroom per se ('bluing' reaction).

The "green" is the oxidation of Psilocin, an indicator that your mushroom is active. This is a good thing.

The white fuzzy growth in the hollow stems of Psilocybe mushrooms is called a "pith". It is a common characteristic of Psilocybe mushrooms. You should know this already having taking the time to figure out how to grow hallucinogenic mushrooms. Then again its not suprising, why know anything about the mushroom your growing other than it will "get you high, make you trip" thats all anyone here is interested in right?

I have to admit that I am somewhat insulted by these accusations. As a student of biology (to be specific: neurobiology) I think that I can claim some healthy interest in the diversity and intricateness of nature.

I am not too familiar with this kind of mushrooms (yet) and I have never seen this phenomenon to this degree before, neither have I seen a single photography of the inside of a mushroom (altough I have spent way too much time with browsing websites like this one).

If you have the feeling that the members of this board are only interested in the mushroom's effect while neglecting the more subtle parts of cultivation, please say so in a constructive, positive way. Irritating 'innocent' members of the community with spontaneous outbursts like this one probably does not help a lot.

wow...it wasnt supposed to offend the members who actually want to learn about the mushroom...chill mang, wasnt an outburst or an attack. But alot of people on herer are only interested in cultivating this species for either just to get "high" or to make money selling them. they dont give two shits about the mushrooms themselves.

What you have on the inside of the stems is normal but greater then most ive seen, although very few mushrooms of mine got there stems split like the before drying.

Yes i think your question was very valid.

That might of been a little harsh of lizardking but i definatly see where he is coming from.
LK if questions like these bother you dont read this forum. Any expierenced grower will not need to post pictures and questions if stuff is contammed.

In the case of mushrooms ignorance is not bliss, in fact it may be quite deadly. But you certainly wouldn't want to begrudge a first-time grower his/her right to ask questions... especially on this, a growing website. The fact that someone even asked in the first place shows an interest in the subject.

Wow... flames in contamination.  I think this is a first, or nearly so!

Heidegger: don't take LK's general comments to be directed at you.  Since you are new here, you haven't seen some of the 'muck' that LK is talking about.  We get a lot of 'kiddies' asking silly questions.  Sometimes when a person posts a serious question, they accidently get lumped in with the 'kiddies'.  Everybody has a bad day now and then...

As another member pointed out: Its unfortunate that this statement [LizardKing's] is so true..

Of course Jackolantern voiced my opinion as well:

> The fact that someone even asked in the first place shows an interest in the subject.

Peace
