Windows 8 Pro necessary to print on networked printer?
    #19377280 - 01/06/14 01:37 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

This is what one of the people (not the tech guy) who routinely helps people set up new computers here at the office is telling my partner.  I don't know enough about Win 8 and differences between the versions to say whether or not this is correct.

Is the particular configuration of the network a deciding factor in this?

It depends on the drivers being used and their compatibility.

If the printer is locked down so that it will only print from a print server, and the print server is locked down so that it will only talk to domain joined computers, then Windows 8 RT will not work (as you cannot domain join Windows 8 RT).  This doesn't really answer your question about Windows 8 Pro, but is my best guess of what might be happening.

Thanks Seuss, I've reached out to the network/IT guy and am waiting an answer on the structure of the network/truth of this assertion.

If you can ping the printer you can print to it. Wired, wireless, network shared ect.

This is fairly accurate for a generic response.  Most network printers can still be printed to via TCP/IP, for the time when maybe your network just isn't windows at all as an example.  But if the printer itself is locked down to only use domain related stuff, or some of the rules Suess stated then you cannot without joining the domain.  But IMO every corp office I've ever worked in that has proper network printers has them setup with their usual mostly default settings which includes it being its own print server, being on a windows network but also running on some TCP/IP ports and other non-windows specific printing methods.

It might be as simple as manually installing the printers driver software on the client side PC, then telling the software/windows printer config the IP address of the printer.

The IT guy actually came in yesterday to announce he'd figured out a workaround.  He said he'd written a patch that works for now but could be undone by future updates.

Though he was quite brief, his response as to why it wouldn't work is that Windows 8 was a complete departure from the way normal and enterprise versions interact.  It was something about the component used to normally configure networked printers on the client side was not included on regular Win 8 versions.

I dunno...

Pretty sure it really only boils down to the lack of being able to join a domain.  his patch was most likely one of the things I mentioned earlier where he just sets up the computer to dorectly connect to the printer with tcp/ip as if there wasn't a windows network to connect to at all.
