A cool mist and an ultrasonic are two very different animals. A cool mist doesn't add much humidity compared to the amount of air it pushes and is used primarily for air exchange. An ultrasonic is run for only a few minutes an hour 'cause they put out a lot of himidity and little air exchange. You can buy both at your local kmart or walmart, or you can order one online. Ultra sonics are around 40-60 bucks for an inexpensive one. You would have a very hard time trying to build an ultrasonic.

The vicks cool mist is the one that most people use. It's only 29 bucks which is a lot cheaper than those lamps which cost upwards of 70 bucks. There are lots of teks available on how to hook them up. Just do a search.
If you already have one of the lamps, it could probably be modified to work, but I've never heard of anybody using one before, so you're probably going to have to experiment on your own if you want to try one of these out.

I saw one at Wal-mart yesterday and they carry them at SEARS...a 1.2 gallon Holmes Ultra-sonic humidifier is $39.99.Just call your local SEARS and give them the the item# and see if they have it in stock. 42 is the division and 14175 is the item#. Also they might have a larger one on clearance it's # is 42-14125 and it might be around 40$...good luck.
