Haha you would think, but you'd be surprised how affordable big projects can be when you do them yourself and a little at a time.

University takes money but also time, I have a kid to provide for and rent to pay, but if building a small lab in the backyard meant I could grow edibles for the farmer's market nearby then it wouldn't really be so much an outright expenditure as an investment.

And considering how prevalent wild mushrooms are where I live (it barely ever reaches the right conditions for them to appear [too dry most of the time]) anything that's fresh and organic is welcome but not very easy to find unless you want to go to central market and pay $15-20 a lb for mushrooms (which alot of people here don't mind that either lol).

Just spitballin really.  Can't blame a guy for dreamin.

I think it would take you quite a while to recover the cost of a built-on lab through selling mushrooms.  I know there's money to be made, but unless you go large scale, i think it will just supplement an existing income.

You could grow these edible mushrooms you speak of in your home right now...just like everyone here, and try to sell them that way.  If it becomes lucrative enough, then get yourself bits of equipment as you go.  You won't have to look for an employer if you employ yourself.  You won't have to go to school for a few years, pay out your arse for tuition, or find a babysitter for your boy.  It's a win win win win for you.
I went to the library years ago when i started picking Lib's.  Got a mycology book and kept it for about a year.  I learned alot from that one book.  If you're resourceful enough, you should have no problem with this at all.

Your right it would be a win win win win haha  and that's how I intend on starting out.  I just need more space to work in, I barely have any as it is as we live in a fairly small house.  But I guess that can be changed with time.

True, if I did that though I would need to have humidifiers hooked up to them wouldn't I? since I wouldn't be able to fan/mist them without moving them all around 4 times a day.

Monotubs are set & forget style. No misting and fanning required.

Yeah but most of the ones I've found on here still require something to maintain humidity.

I mean you can't really leave them alone for the entire 2 weeks - a month it takes to colonize the bulk sub, case it, then leave it alone for another few weeks without humidification can you?

It maintains humidity through having a casing layer and being a closed tub with minimal air exchange.

Yep.

But with less air exchange means more co2 buildup so you'll have to choose a co2 tolerant species to grow.

I thought the indirect running fan in a room was enough for FAE...do you still have to fan?

I don't think that would be enough for oysters or other species that love fresh air. The would be enough for cubes or maybe shiitake or enoki

Not with the correct strain and environment.

Also, why are we talking about growing in mono tubs if he is trying to make a living growing edibles? What, going to make a living off of 10lbs of oysters a week?

Yes, you do leave a monotub of Cubes alone for weeks. The only times you should open it are at spawning, wen you introduce FAE, harvest time and if you think you have a contam you can pop the lid to check.

And yeah, growing edibles will require something a little better, or at least more maintenance.

How often you introduce FAE to a mono?  I thought the fan took care of that.....
