Kratom Leaves Browning
    #19334763 - 12/27/13 10:22 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I recently moved my kratom sapling from my closet to a corner of a room curtained off. He dropped almost no leaves for a couple days after the move, except for a couple small ones, but now is dropping at least several a day

The leaves turn brown around the edges, then fall.

I just left for a couple of days and my senile neighbor took care of my plants. He said he watered with his fish's shit water to help "fertilize" them because that's what he used to do... That can't be too good for them can it?

I might just be jumping to conclusions but could it be a salt deficiency? Should I leech the pot, then fertilize with compost tea?

Is it cold? It might be the cold if it is. My kratom are all sticks because of the cold.

Looks like drought damage to me, and no, fish water is high in natural ammoniacal nitrogen, and is very good for plants.
Water it well and keep an eye on it, doesn't look bad.

Awesome! Thanks for the fast responses guys. My mind always jumps to worst case scenario. It's a wonder I'm not a hypochondriac

I can definitely water more often, I just cut back a bit because it isn't as hot in there as the closet. It shouldn't be cold damage because it stays warmer overnight in the room than the closet, but I'll keep an eye out just in case.

Thanks again!

It was pretty damn broken and needed fixing

Running my hps at 360 watts with one large fan running at full capacity inside the closet, and a small exhaust fan I was still getting 85f to 95f every day this winter. That was alright for my kratom but it really stunted some tomatoes and other things I had going.

At the new setup it's about 75f to 80f consistently. It's a nice middleground. The closet was like a fucking sauna

Word of warning, over watering can also cause similar browning on the leaves due to a bacterial bloom in the roots.
Check the soil, don't let it get soupy or remain soggy to long. Make sure it dries out in between waterings.

Update!

Things haven't improved  I initially watered more, but because leaves kept browning I've stopped watering so often.

I'm assuming it's a bacterial bloom because more watering didn't fix it (the top layer of soil was dried out when I watered, but I didn't check much deeper than an inch). Shortly before I quit watering I started leaving a heater on during the night, and he began to grow again. I stopped watering a few days ago when I noticed the new leaves beginning to brown.

Now his limbs haven't drooped from lack of water, so that's a plus, but assuming it's bacteria how should I fix this? Should I starve them of water, or is there I treatment I can start?

Thanks everybody! Any input welcome

If any more pictures would help let me know!

Op, sorry about your troubles

There are a number of problems going on here:

1. The internodal spacing on that Kratom plant is FAR too stretched, indicating that it's not getting enough light.

2. It appears that it is suffering from either a nitrogen deficiency, or perhaps a Calcium/Magensium deficiency. What soil is it in? Or coco?

3. Your soil, medium, whatever seems pretty dry. Kratom does appreciate being relatively moist at all times.

1. I'm pretty sure it's getting enough light. It's about 2-3 feet under a hps running at either 400 or 600w (depending on the heat that day). The nodes are there if you look up at the first picture, but by now the leaves have fallen off the majority of nodes. If I could stick him under the sun I would, but it's wayyy too cold where I am right now.

2. It's in miracle grow moisture control. I've used "buffaloam" (buffalo shit) compost tea a couple of times since the leaves began falling, but I didn't want to overdo it so I stopped. I'm sure it's not the best brand but I managed to find it locally. I'm also pretty sure I'm not using it correctly, I just made a suspension type fluid with it like it said on the can.

Should I get another brand of compost tea/fertilizer?

3. I had been watering it pretty frequently, but stopped to see if overwatering was the root of the problem. I'll start watering again, but lightly.

I'm pretty sure he's getting enough light, but I could be wrong. And no problem I'm not going to be insulted I came here for help

I wish that were the problem :frown: I can rule that out because it was thriving in the 95deg closet I had him in last. I believe it actually tried to go dormant from the change over, because of the cool nighttime temperatures. Once I set up a heater at night to run at 85deg growth started the next morning.

I'm honestly stumped at the whole situation.

Miracle Grow Moisture Control is actually an excellent soil for them. There's a really big Kratom website where the guy actually recommends that soil as his top soil for Kratom. It's not the best I've found as far as using different soils and adding additives, but it's definitely the best straight out of the bag.

If it hasn't been in that soil for very long, it may not have spread roots far enough nor had enough time to "eat" the nutrients it's already been given in the soil. I would back off on any sort of additional nutrient feedings until it looks better, and maybe even give it a flush with just pure water. Water it until 30% of the water or so has ran out the bottom, that should help kinda "reboot" things.

That, and your probably right about the nighttime temperatures. Correct both of those and you should be good.

I think mg. deficiency is the real problem. If fishtank water is rich in ammonium nitrates, and mg. deficiency can be caused by a buildup of ammonium nitrates, then it must be mg. deficiency?

Epsom salt can be used to foliar feed as a short term fix, and watering with it to fix it longterm? I'm almost 100% certain that he's rootbound by this point, but I have no bigger pot to move him into, or the space.

If it's a mg deficiency what would you recommend, flush or epsom, or both?

Thanks everyone

That soil should have enough nutrients in it, as well as cal/mag for a while, particularly since it looks to be recently repotted.

I would just flush that thing out with tons of water and then after a few days, once the surface looks dry in some areas, water again with a 1/4 strength nutrient solution.

Alright sounds like a plan

It has been in that soil for a good 2-3 months, but that's probably considered a recent repot...

Thanks alot! I'll post an update once it's been long enough to see how it goes.

Yeah it should have enough nutrients. Allow the plant to eat what it's got before you go and attempt to give it liquid nutrients. Usually with a high-feeding plant like Kratom the majority of the nutrients should be gone in 3-4 weeks or so, but if the plant isn't in an active growth state then it very well may not have eaten what's on it's plate yet, so to speak. Good luck man, Kratom is a great plant once you get them dialed in.
