Dont use lava rocks. Use perlite. You can find both at a garden center. I would recommend perlite.

I am using lava rocks for the first time but there is one thing that you should definately do. Rinse them out really good before you use them.

I have an experiment going outside that I'm using lava rocks in. They are at the bottom of a flower pot grow. The pot has hole at the bottom that water can escape from and CO2 can also. Once this thing gets colonized on top I'm going to use the lava rock in the same maner as hydroton or perlite. The flower pot will be placed in a shallow pan of water so that the rocks are submerged but not any of the substrate. The mycelium should be able to draw moisture from this as the fruits deplete it from the substrate. I will also be casing using a 60/40 Coir/Verm mix.

This winter I might try some lava rocks in a Poor Man's Pod.

afoaf has 3 inches of rocks and two inches of water with two 5"X1" bubble stones under it. Humidity always +98. Didn't break 'em up, but definately rinsed 'em off really well.
Also, my friend's friend completely agrees with whoever said that perlite's a pain in the ass. It works, but it's some messy shit.

An air stone is a long porous stone like attachment that uses an air pump to aerate fish tanks. Look for it in the pet store around the fish tank accessories.

leave the lid cracked, to let some moisture out, i think that would work. it would be a bit more risky, but i don't think it should hurt if your thing isn't on the floor or in a very dirty room.

Don't worry about the RH Im doing casings and my RH is usualy between 96 & 99 all the time... It would be higher but I keep a fan on inside the pod and for some reason that keeps the RH below 100.
