Question about stroma and overlay

Do the terms stroma and overlay refer to the same phenomenon? If so wats the nuanced difference between them?
And secondly, does overlay only happen to casing layers? Can it also happen to an all coir substrate with no casing?

No.

RogerRabbit said: Overlay is bullshit and most of it relates to a picture of a normal casing layer in TMC that is incorrectly labeled as overlay.
A few months ago, I 'jokingly' said I'd ban the next person who asked an overlay question and it worked . . .until now.
What happens is one person asks about overlay, and for the next six months, every new grower thinks he has overlay.
I can guarantee you don't have it, since I've only seen it a handful of times, and I've been known to have grown a few projects in my day. Full colonization of the casing layer is not overlay. Give lots of fresh air and light, while misting a few times daily and you'll fruit soon. RR

RogerRabbit said: I've seen overlay two or three times in 40 years, so I doubt seriously you are seeing it, especially on an uncased bulk substrate. It's common for new growers to mistake full colonization for overlay. RR

ok so i what i thought i had was overlay but i guess if you have only seen it a few times its not the problem. so i have had this pan in the fruiting chamber for maybe two weeks and it has not started fruiting. it is a single strain isolate. i had one pan in there before and it did fruit but it was rather weak only putting up about 12 small mushrooms and it was from a MS inoculation. assuming its not overlay what should i look at first. note i fan out the fruiting chamber twice a day and it sits at about 27 C. 100-95 % humidity. it also has an air pump that is on 24/7.

what type of fruiting chamber and sub are you using at what depth, either your conditions are wrong or it's an isolate you do not want

I don’t really know what too call it, it’s a shotgun in principle but heavily modified. Expanded clay pellets with an air stone, fish tank heater, and water pump. The tray sits on the expanded clay pellets that are almost floating on water. The water is heated and circulated from one end to the other there is a light on a timer, it stays pretty much on point with the needed environmental settings. .006% h2o2 to keep that water clean in the clay pellets

those are called poor mans pods which the name doesn't reflect well considering a sgfc is cheaper lol, check your moisture levels to see if it's waterlogged or dry

I don't see any air holes. I hope you're not relying solely on fanning for fresh air.

Yeah shotguns are significantly cheaper. What should I use to test for moisture content and what should I be aiming for. I am seeing some beading of water on the surface of the casing and it is starting to pull away from the sides. Rye grain substrate, casing= peat moss 4% coco + gypsum

Oh you said water pump. I take it you meant air pump. I would still supplement it with some air holes. Those pumps more for increasing the humidity than for providing adequate fresh air. Fresh air is the most important pinning trigger.
