Starting a traincar oyster op???
    #19392980 - 01/09/14 10:16 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

To start off I have grown oysters since the spring at home for a hobby. I haven't gotten to any other types yet but definately plan to. I have stamets-growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms and have read it several times. NowI have the opportunity to start an op in a 8ft wide by 40ft long metal storage container the type they use on ships. I plan to begin by running multiple varietys of oysters in stacked 5gallon buckets. I need advice on what you guys would reccomend to cool and humidify this beast. Our summers range from 90-115f degrees with very low humidity the majority of the time. Any advice or tips to get this thing producing mushrooms for my area??

Bury that thing.

A metal box in 115 degree heat will be very costly to keep cool.

Assuming those shipping containers have sufficient strength in the roof,
do yourself a favor, ditch the buckets and hang columns.

They're just covered with sheet metal and you don't want to drill into it.

To the OP, you need to bury it so the ground provides the temperature you need year 'round.  Paint with marine enamel or epoxy first, and wrap with tarps as a moisture barrier.  You can see mine at www.mountainmushroomfarm.com

This is what I did with mine:

Bought some warehouse insulation on craigslist and built a frame around it. I had all the wood so it wasn't an expensive process but I wouldn't really recommend it. Really with the air exchange needed for oysters I'm not sure how much insulation actually helps. Burying it sounds like a MUCH better idea tho.

Thanks guys and I've always had a dream of one day burying one of these suckers for the purpose ever since I saw the union with the 10 buried traincarts and then solidified by seeing rogerrabbits setup. Unfortunately this isn't possible for this potential setup because its already 2 of these containers one stacked on top of the other. Its at a wood working business so their main byproduct is sawdust which is why the man wants me to help him set it up to use the dust for production. He says both would be useable one as a fruit chamber and the other potentially a lab and incubation area. I was thinking heat would be a bit out of control b ut that's why I figured id see if anyone on here had experience or an idea for an easy way to cool her down. As I've been thinking about it I wanted to do something similar to the carport shade canopy posted above or at least tarps a few feet above to block the sun but don't know what would actually be feasible. It might just be too damn hot in the summer but if there's any ideas id love to hear them! Tthanks guys I love this community

So I guess the only way this might work is seasonably?

where there is a will there is a way.  you may want to try tropical strains.  pink oyster, phoenix oyster, milky mushroom, and paddy straw mushroom come to mind.  i have grown oysters in 100F, and it's not ideal but it is possible.
