Day 41:
Christmas: Plus Kwanzaa bonus fact!

All around the world for many centuries the middle of Winter has been celebrated by a long list of different cultures. The middle of Winter, particularly the Winter Solstice marks longer hours of sunlight, and the worst of Winter having already passed. As is the case with the majority of Christian Holidays, Christmas was first celebrated very differently by "pagans" before Christianity was invented. Keep in mind the word "pagan" is just a catch all turn used by Christians that basically just means anything that is non-Christian.
The Norse in Scandinavia celebrated Yule, from the Winter Solstice (Dec 21st) all the way through January. They would bring home large logs that they would burn to symbolize the return of the sun. These logs were used to cook a feast that would last as until the fire burnt out, which would sometimes take almost two weeks. The Norse believed that each of the sparks from the fire represented a now calf or piglet that would be born during the upcoming year. This is where we get the modern tradition of the Yule log.

The end of the year was also a good time for celebration all across Europe because it was when they would have more meat and alcohol. All of the remaining cattle would always be slaughtered at the end of the year so they would not need to be fed. This would provide the many peoples all across Europe with a surplus of fresh meat. All of the alcohol that had been fermenting thorough the year would finally be ready for drinking around the end of the year as well.
Part of the Santa figure comes from the god Odin, who the Germans believed make nocturnal fights across the land to observe who would "prosper or perish." The way Odin would fly around, was on his 8-legged Reindeer, he also wore garments that were red and white, and had a long white beard. It was during Mid-December that the Germans chose to pay their homage to Odin.

In Rome, there were two holidays that were celebrated relatively around the same time. The first was called Juvenalia, which was a feast the Romans would hold around the Winter Solstice honoring all of the Children of Rome. On the 25th of December Romans honored the birthday of Mithra, the angelic Goddess of coven, oath, and the unconquerable sun. Mithra's birthday was the most sacred day of the year, for some Romans.
The second, Saturnalia, was a holiday in honor of the Roman God Saturn, the God of agriculture. It began the week that would lead up to the Winter Solstice and then a month after that. Saturnalia was a great time of hedonism, where there was plenty of fool, drink, and pleasure to go around. During this time normal Roman social order was turned upside down, meaning the slaves and the peasants were the masters left in charge of the city. All schools and businesses were closed during this time allowing everyone to participate in the revelry.

During the fourth century the church decided that they wanted to make the birth of Jesus a holiday. Seeing as Jesus was NEVER a real living historical figure, the Bible never mentioned when he was born. But Pope Julius I decided to combine all surrounding celebrations and make December 25th the birthdate of Jesus.
By the Middle Ages the Christmas celebration had become a time of drunken revelry with a carnival-like atmosphere similar to Mardi Gras. Similar to Saturnalia, each year a beggar would be crowned as the "lord of misrule" and have participants play his subjects. The lower class would go to the homes of the rich and request their best food and drink, and if the rich didn't agree they would be terrorized similar to trick or treat.
After the American Revolution many traditions perceived to be British, including Christmas fell out of favor. By the early 19th century the Christmas season marked a time of great turmoil between the upper and lower classes. It was not until authors came along like Washington Irving and Charles Dickens what we would began to see a Christmas more similar to the one we see today.

Day 42 (the meaning of life, the universe, and everything):
Good Guy Scumbag Gandhi:
Gandhi is a much loved pioneer of peaceful protest and activism so this next fact might come as a bit of a shocker to some of you. I still think he's a great dude with a great message, I want you all to keep that in mind the whole time when reading this next fact.

August of 1942, Gandhi and his wife, Kasturba, were captured as they often were during their activism by the British. During their time being imprisoned Kasturba developed bronchial pneumonia. Devadas, one of her four sons suggested that she take penicillin, however Gandhi refused. He only allowed her to receive traditional healings and no modern western medicine. As her conditioned worsened Devadas continued pushed for the penicillin, Gandhi disagreed shooting back, "Why don't you trust God?" Later that ever day Kasturba died of her ailment which penicillin could have cured.

If almost brought upon him by the cosmic consciousness, 6 weeks later Gandhi came down with malaria. And what did Gandhi do? Did he say western medicine be damned and place all his faith in God like he told his wife to do? Fuck no! He told western medicine and recovered soon after...
