Cicada 3301

Has anyone else heard of this? I find it absolutely fascinating. Basically some anonymous organization has been posting these extremely complex puzzles on the internet since 2012. The puzzles focus on things like data security, cryptography, stenography, obscure literature, mathematics and all sorts of other crazy shit. Apparently this is some sort of recruitment effort by the organization to find "intelligent individuals" as they call it.
I mean this is some next level Da Vinci code shit. Here are some links if you want to read into it some more....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_3301
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/11/cicada_3301_2014/
It seems some people have "won" already but none of them have come forth. I found this piece of info kinda interesting....
"After a designated number of solvers visited the address, the website shut down with a terse message: “We want the best, not the followers.” The chosen few received personal emails – detailing what, none have said, although one solver heard they were now being asked to solve puzzles in private. Eriksson, however, was not among them. “It was my biggest anticlimax – when I was too late to register my email at the TOR hidden service,” he says. “If my sleep-wake cycle had been different, I believe I would have been among the first.” Regardless, a few weeks later, a new message from Cicada was posted on Reddit. It read: “Hello. We have now found the individuals we sought. Thus our month-long journey ends. For now.” All too abruptly for thousands of intrigued solvers, it had gone quiet."
There are plenty of theories out there as to who is behind this. Everyone from the CIA/NSA to the Illuminati. Whoever is behind this is obviously VERY smart and very well organized. The IRL portions of the puzzle had signs posted on lamp posts in cities all around the world.
I also found the literature they have been using pretty interesting. The puzzles included things from authors like William Blake, Aleister Crowley, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
I was looking into the symbolism of the cicada and I found this when I was reading about the Chinese symbolism...
" in this context the multiple shedding of shell of the cicada symbolizes the many stages of transformation required of a person before all illusions have been broken and one reaches enlightenment."
I found that pretty interesting especially since their latest message read "Hello. Epiphany is upon you. Your pilgrimage has begun. Enlightenment awaits. Good luck. 3301."
So what do you guys think? Evil organization planning world domination or elaborate internet troll? Damn I wish I was smart enough to actually try my hand at cracking it.

I dunno , I find it kind of hard to believe a group would go through so much trouble just for the lulz.

from the article:

No one knows who is behind the spooky tests, or if they do, they're not telling. Apparently, it first surfaced on a grim 4chan.org discussion board about the paranormal, with the message: "We are looking for highly intelligent individuals."

It's still going on, but clearly you have to be like next level smart to even have a chance. I'm really interested to see if anything actually comes of this, or maybe they'll just disappear once they have all the people they need. I love me a good mystery and this seems to be king of them all IMO.

Strongly doubt that Illuminati reptilians are recruiting on 4chan. Somehow I don't think you're raising your chances of finding highly intelligent individuals by searching through the shitstains of humanity.

4chan /x/ the paranormal board is not like 4chan /b/ aka the b tards. Totally different crowds think creepypasta instead of trolling. They would probably like to have a slenderman type thing take off though, so it's possible it's just a hoax. Or the NSA made it who knows, I think the story is intertesting though either way.

First fucking sentence of the section, dude. Clearly you're not the type they're looking for.
