They were all growing on pine. One of the brownish colored cap mushroom's stem bruised a really dark purple on the base and just a darker color for the rest of it. There was no noticeable blue bruising.

Found a ton of interesting fungi today including literally about hundred specimens of g.penetrans. I will post the rest of my finds in a bit.
Some sorta amanita, very red on top-

Cool purple cortinarius(?) Growing from palm-

Weird possible gym growing by itself amongst leaf and pine needle litter. Had an orange annulus remnant just beneath the gills-

Slug munchin down on what I thought was g. Liquiritae-

I'd easily call your purple Cortinarius a C. violaceus. Note that many species of Cortinarius requires a display of the inner flesh to be identified by macroscopic features. Slice a mature specimen lengthwise in twain.
Your Amanita looks like a variety of A. muscaria. Dig up the mushroom with its base intact to display the entire volva. Also take good pictures of entire stem, annulus and gills.

Thanks for the info Anglerfish ill make sure to dig up that amanita if I return to that spot anytime soon. Here's a species that I found all over today. I can't decide between a gym, cort, laccaria, or what. They have orange gills with orange veil remnants, and even dropped orange spores. I found them growing in pine needle litter, green moss, some sorta dead wood, and even on a pine cone. Stems bruised red.

They seemed to love growing around this as well-

Any ideas on this one? Lots of gym pictures to come.

I think you actually can get a macro app for new "smart" phones - did I read about it on this forum perhaps? I still have a "stupid" phone so I don't know.
Probably nothing to bother with if you're on the verge of getting a proper setup in any case.

Whoa, I would have never thought that an app would improve my camera. I will toy around with some of them for sure, thanks once again.
Well I still have some shitty pictures id like to share in the meantime. Yesterday turned out to be not just my first, but my first three gymnopilus pine cone finds.
Here's what I think is g.liquiritae on a pinecone with a pretty penetrans.

I think sapineus/penetrans on this one-

Liquiritae?

Anndd here's some of the more attractive photos of penetrans frm yesterday-

I still have content to upload but it is truly a pain in the ass to do with my phone so ill get some more up later.

I also wanted to put this one up, the shape resembles some aeruginosus specimens I've seen and this was the only one of its kind that I've found. Maybe even galerina?
The one in question is on the far right.

Thanks Suchen, it was pretty exciting finding all of those in one day. Here's a crazy cool gym found today on some thin unidentified wood. Look at how the gills bend upwards, the cap looks like a crown!! Also, sand and grass gyms are making a comeback so I will be sure to get some good photos of those.

Small gyms growing from buried palm-

Gym growing from pine with other penetrans, which led me to believe these are just mature penetrans but the scales on the cap threw me off-
Amanita everywhere, I'm pretty sure muscaria on all these-

No spore print, didn't keep them. If anything, I think there was some red bruising on the stipes. They were extremely bitter... Just came home from finding these awesome mushrooms. My first thought was psilocybe, but realistically I'm thinking deconica? I've never seen something like these growing on wood here. I believe black/ dark purple spores were dropped on one of the caps. I meant to take habitat pictures because the place was outstanding, giant palms and other trees. It looked like jurassic park or some shit. However, it started to rain and Ihad to get out of there but I will definetly revisit this spot.

I'm hoping it wasn't the rain that deterred you from mushroom hunting
Did you keep this mushroom? Or take a spore print? If you didn't..... did you notice any blue bruising?
My guess is Hypholoma sp. I could be wrong and most likely I am.

It was indeed very sad leaving it behind... And the rain is what made my hunting buddy complain until we left, otherwise id still be there. I held on to the specimens for a while but didn't notice any blue. The stems on these were quite frail with the caps being hardy.

Does anyone have any extra info on the lepidotus-subearlei clade of gymnopilus? From the mycologia page I know they have red fibres on the pileus and appear in tropical environments but that is quite vague. I think I have a few matches on my MO, especially this one and other the other terrestrial specimens-

Every time I come to this spot these gyms are growing like wildfire on the same couple of logs.

And here is another mushroom I think may be a gym that my friend found in his woodchips. Excuse the dirty fingernails they aren't mine maybe a laccaria species or something of that sort?

The second one looks a lot like a Hypholoma. I know a few Hypholoma species on the west coast have caps that split like that and the color looks right but I am consistently wrong and still learning.

Nah, G. sapineus Fries is a deprecated synonym for G. penetrans. G. sapineus Maire is a European mushroom that looks nothing like any thing in this thread. Seann has posted several interesting species resembling liquiritiae, dryophilus, peliolepis, palmicola and god knows what else.

Are these being collected and dried or put on mushroom observer? I don't understand what's going on here. I know if I was in gym weather and finding this amount variety I'd be dead set on making sure they were properly ID and documented.

Nomadbrad, sadly I do not collect the specimens I photograph and only put a few on mushroom observer. Here's the link to my observations - http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/observations_by_user/5158
I used to be deadset on identification before I realized how useless it is to even try with most of the stuff I find without proper resources. I try using gymnopilus keys and applying them to my finds but mostly without success. Gravija, I do agree that pretty much everything I've found on pinecones and whatnot in this thread are penetrans with the exception of maybe one or two mushrooms. Thanks for the interest guys!

Notice the scales on the smaller specimen-

These were two different gyms growing on the same pine limb-

They look more like Pholiota to me. Check the spore print color, or check to see if the caps get real slimy if you wet them.

Just went out before this storm hit.. here's a couple more specimens of the proposed pholiota I was able to find. The fattened apex of the stipe is reoccurring in this species. An orange webby veil was also observed between the gills and stipe of a specimen that may or may have not been the same mushroom.

Here's orange spores dropped by, once again, may or may not be the same mushroom -

Moving on to other stuff found while I was out there..
Growing from pine, quite dried out-

Pine stick-

These were all fruiting from what I think was buried pine roots in sand-

Oh yeah, MidnightCity inspired me to take photos of this palm hammock I recently discovered.it is fully equipped with every palm, streams, and even old ass fallen telephone wire beams. The problem is that I was only able to find a couple russulas and polypores throughout this entire area... guess I just have to wait for more rain and heat to find the good stuff.

A Russula that associates with palm? Why didn't you photograph & collect it?

I didn't think it was too much of interest. They were small red-capped russulas growing at the base of standing palms. I will be sure to photograph if i happen upon them again. The russulas are very abundant around here.

Most people step over red Russula because of how hard they are to identify, but growing with palm is rather unusual, at least from my perspective. You might be able to get someone like Mike Davis to take interest if you save them with photographs.

That looks like a great spot Seann, I'd be really interested to see what you find there.

Thanks, same with yours
Here are some of yesterday's finds. Let me add that many of my recent finds have been in a swampy habitat but on a higher altitude trail if that can help with identification.
Gymnopilus or galerina?? -

Were those first ones in the most recent post growing directly from wood or from the ground? Are the caps umbonate? It's not easy to tell from that angle.

They were growing from a fallen pine log, and the caps were completely convex.

What's up everybody??? Its been awhile since I've added to this thread but here's something I found yesterday that id like to share... return of the dirt gyms! I only found this specimen but I expect much more to be popping up. Very small mushroom, scaly cap, orange spore deposit on the ground, and the stem turned very dark after squeezing. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to post in here after so long

My buddy found this mushroom in a lush lawn next to a sprinkler. There are more specimens but unfortunately he only took this picture. The caps were distinctly white with an orange color in the middle and the stem was twisty with reddish bruising. Is it possible to propose anything? I was thinking definitely panaeolus and mostly likely active because of the black gills and reddening stem. Maybe sun baked cincts?

He should take a spore print. And close-up pictures, too. Looks like Panaeolus sp.

I'm betting on those gills having jet black spores, not really sure what besides that...

Sorry for not getting back to you Bloodworm but sadly I cannot, I do not save any of the mushrooms I find, nor would I have an ideal place to store them.. but anyway, here's the gymnopilus I've been finding in the past week or so. We have had plenty of rain and heat
I will actually start off with this suspected panaeolus and then number the gyms from here. This mushroom was growing in grass directly next to the road with dog shit around. These photographs were taken after it was handled a bit and accidently dropped, so it was quite hardier then it looks. The cap was brown with a black zonate around the edge, and the stem was flimsy, bruising a strange dark purple color.

#1 Small, yellow gyms fruiting from pine sticks.

#2 These gyms were fruiting on a burnt pine limb hidden in the shade. The caps of these were neat looking and I though I observed some subtle blue bruising on the stipes after squeezing.

#3 These small ones were fruiting in sand with burnt wood and probably burnt wood debris in the sand, directly next to #2. I though they kinda looked similar as well.

#4 These were fruiting from sand with grass nearby.. notice the purple ring on the stipe!

#5

#6 Very cool gyms fruiting from a partially burried palm. Orange spores got all over everything they touched. The stipes turned an interesting purple color over time and after handling.

#7 Some small, clustered, yellow jimmies once again on buried palm.

#8 Largely clustered gyms on pine.

#9 A single different specimen out of a cluster in 8.

Annnd finally, a mixed collection photo.
