The ones you find on pinecones and pine duff look a lot like penetrans.

Are these being collected and dried or put on mushroom observer?  I don't understand what's going on here.  I know if I was in gym weather and finding this amount variety I'd be dead set on making sure they were properly ID and documented.

Nomadbrad, sadly I do not collect the specimens I photograph and only put a few on mushroom observer. Here's the link to my observations -
http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/observations_by_user/5158

I used to be deadset on identification before I realized how useless it is to even try with most of the stuff I find without proper resources. :frown: I try using gymnopilus keys and applying them to my finds but mostly without success. Gravija, I do agree that pretty much everything I've found on pinecones and whatnot in this thread are penetrans with the exception of maybe one or two mushrooms. Thanks for the interest guys!

Found these gyms last night all on pine. Any guesses on the species?

Notice the scales on the smaller specimen-

These were two different gyms growing on the same pine limb-

They look more like Pholiota to me.  Check the spore print color, or check to see if the caps get real slimy if you wet them.

Nah, G. sapineus Fries is a deprecated synonym for G. penetrans. G. sapineus Maire is a European mushroom that looks nothing like any thing in this thread. Seann has posted several interesting species resembling liquiritiae, dryophilus, peliolepis, palmicola and god knows what else.

I haven't been been keeping up on which names have been deprecated. One of these reasons I gave up on learning any new mushroom names/ID's.

Gymnopilus is a toughie. I don't like proposing species names for them anymore, even the ones that have always seemed like ringers in the past.

Just went out before this storm hit.. here's a couple more specimens of the proposed pholiota I was able to find. The fattened apex of the stipe is reoccurring in this species. An orange webby veil was also observed between the gills and stipe of a specimen that may or may have not been the same mushroom.

Here's orange spores dropped by, once again, may or may not be the same mushroom -

Moving on to other stuff found while I was out there..

Growing from pine, quite dried out-

Pine stick-

These were all fruiting from what I think was buried pine roots in sand-

Oh yeah, MidnightCity inspired me to take photos of this palm hammock I recently discovered.it is fully equipped with every palm, streams, and even old ass fallen telephone wire beams. The problem is that I was only able to find a couple russulas and polypores throughout this entire area... guess I just have to wait for more rain and heat to find the good stuff.

A Russula that associates with palm?  Why didn't you photograph & collect it?

I didn't think it was too much of interest. They were small red-capped russulas growing at the base of standing palms. I will be sure to photograph if i happen upon them again. The russulas are very abundant around here.

Most people step over red Russula because of how hard they are to identify, but growing with palm is rather unusual, at least from my perspective.  You might be able to get someone like Mike Davis to take interest if you save them with photographs.

Thanks, same with yours :mushroom2:

Here are some of yesterday's finds. Let me add that many of my recent finds have been in a swampy habitat but on a higher altitude trail if that can help with identification.

Gymnopilus or galerina??-

Were those first ones in the most recent post growing directly from wood or from the ground? Are the caps umbonate? It's not easy to tell from that angle.

They were growing from a fallen pine log, and the caps were completely convex.

What's up everybody??? Its been awhile since I've added to this thread but here's something I found yesterday that id like to share... return of the dirt gyms! I only found this specimen but I expect much more to be popping up. Very small mushroom, scaly cap, orange spore deposit on the ground, and the stem turned very dark after squeezing. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to post in here after so long :uhoh:
