First lophophora. Its root was pushing it out the old pot. It was practically begging  for  rock

Now I understand for sure why the guy who have grown peyote +40years said only big grain sand and rocks are enough to grow peyote.. Peyote plants he have are always at perfect condition and very hard grown..:yesnod: 6months of growth with 5-7 watering times and 6months dormancy without any water at all makes plants so beautiful and flat.

Ferrel: Your peyote have very cool gray shape! So beautiful..:dancer: How you think to arrange watering? Keep plants in water tray 5-20minutes and let excess water drop out?

That's how I water my peyote plants and they're growing in clay pot with rocks. There are some minor amount of soil with the rocks but water doesn't stay in pot long time so I need to sink every pot to water tray and wait and take 'em off and forget them again.. :tongue2:

Doss anyone know if fullers earth is any good to use.

Just got a bag to try.  Doesn't seem to be treated.  My hands feel dry after handling it.  I wonder if I should soak it in a bucket of water over night just to be safe.

Nice specimens everyone.

Definitely do a soak test. I would leave them soak for a week and then check how it holds up.

These plants look good ferrel, now to see how they grow. I been using a more mineral mix these days myself. Something like 50% Scoria, 25% Perlite and 25% Soil. Was using less soil to begin with but they weren't taking up enough water.

Let the water come up the pot. Not even a minute and water with rain water or RO water. Only. Maybe twice a year. Everything else is up to mother nature.

It appears to be raw.  Not like the baked cat litter that looks like reconstituted powder pellets. It looks like crushed stone of different shades. Going to soak it and see how it acts.

I added montoromolite clay or something like to this mix. Oil absorbant.

I keep this one in pure moler. It was planted shallow on purpose, for rot avoidance out of paranoia. And left to relax in this pot for 3 years, getting a drink if lucky!

Nice!! Never seen that before!:bow2:

I have basically similar "soil" to lophs in clay pots, but I have random mineral rocks, pumicide, perlite and small amount of some soil or coco coir.. But mostly the rocky soil are very airy, if I even spray some water to surface it doesn't need much of a spray water comes out from bottom of container..

No other way to keep them in shape and thirsty.. I have too much accidents with rot and mostly l. fricii so I basically keep all my lophs and ariocarpus in clay pot full of rocks.. Good for my climate tho.

That is one lovely, badly battered plant. How old is it? How big are the buttons?

I wouldn't like to guess at the age. The pot is 20cm across the top, nicely filled with a large tap root

Respect is exactly the word I think of for that plant. Its age, looks and the power within.  :bow2:

It definitly is a looker. i love it mostly. Nowthat i completely wwant togrow in stone, i think i can get away with a nice healthy plant buried to ground level, i lost a huge 7 yr old caespitosa some months back and i know it was the  excess water.

Reminds me of  ancient bonzai.  :Donatello:

Yeah the "fullers earth" I picked up in the fine print said montmorillonite .
I have different screens, thinking about going down to the creek to get a bucket of glacial till to mix in with it.
