So my Mimosa hostillis was doing incredibly well outdoors, in my summer climate. However litterally over night, with the bite of just one frost the tree was clearly dead :[
I Harvested the root bark and yeilded a whopping 6.3 grams dry lol
Though my tree was left to become root bound several times in its life before moving up in pot size, Was never given any supplemental nutrient, near the end it was begging for more nitrogen.
I feel that if instead, I started 10 or so and put them in the ground right after the last frost in a very deeply worked hole. Provided regular feeding, etc... If the root bark yeild could be anywhere near notable.
Even then another issue is if young age significantly effects alkaloid content
Obviously its not something for commercial production or anything, However it could be a neat method for a curious person in a colder climate to actually produce their own home grown MHRB
Here are my Harvest photos, The bark comes off the roots so easily, Its as though it were meant to be stripped of it.

How cold did it get?
We actually had a real freeze here a few days ago and my M. hostilis handled it well as far as I can tell.
No pink/purple color, huh?

It was near 20F
Are your trees more than a year old? I imagine a larger/more established tree could put up with a bit more.
I had many deaths in my yard this winter
And no, no color notable color

Shame about your sapling. I had similar things happen when growing these.
I really recommend you look into the aussie Acacias if you decide to grow anymore trees. They're much more frost hardy and drought tolerant than MH. You can also use the leaves(phyllodes) instead of killing the tree to get at the bark. Only after a few years too.

We got down in the mid-20s here and my Psychotria, Mitragyna, Musa, and Banisteropsis all show fairly signficant freeze damage despite being in protected positions. My tree is 20 ft tall and the trunk is probably 2" in diameter at the moment. I forget exactly how many years old it is, but I think something like 2 or 2.5. Looking closer today it looks like there might have been some significant damage to the younger limbs. I guess we'll see it what it decide to do this spring. My A. colubrina plants show absolutely no signs of the freeze. So they're a bit more cold hardy than M. hostilis for what it is worth.
Sorry to hear your plant ate it.

Interesting. I know my tree roots have the characterstic color. Not sure what's up.
