what is voluntary poverty?

I met a girl today who says she's lives by voluntary poverty. Is that just a fancy way of saying she's cheap and doesn't mind other people paying her way, or is it more of a way of rebelling against the materialistic ways of our society?

You shouldn't assume that other people pay her way. For all you know she's living a very disciplined lifestyle. How judgmental of you.

"Rebelling against our materialistic ways" is generally just a roundabout way of saying that you're a lazy piece of shit who failed to make it in our society. Chances are this girl is unmotivated, void of any skills, lazy, and a non-contributing member of society who has no other option by poverty. Voluntary, my ass.

I never meant to judge, this girl seemed to have an attitude and just wasn't very nice which makes me curious. Maybe she is having a tough time in her life right now, i'm just curious. I don't understand what the voluntary part means.

If I were broke and had no willpower or means to end my poverty, I wouldn't be nice either.

It can mean that she abstains from certain conveniences because she doesn't want to support certain things. for example, she might cut her own hair because she finds the idea of paying someone else to do something that she's capable of doing herself to be undesirable. She might ride a bike as a opposed to drive a car, because she doesn't want to support the oil industry. She might read books as opposed to take classes in college...you get the idea...

I am in voluntary poverty, in my case it just means I'm lazy as fuck and don't have a job because I don't want to work. I just do random shit occasionally for money.
Although I'm supposed to be getting a regular job soon.

I would say I lived in voluntary poverty for quite some time... Nobody was paying my way and I did work, so I was "contributing". It was a happy time in my life. My expenses were few. I lived in a van and you bet your ass I cut my own hair instead of paying someone to do it. I also learned to sew and got pretty good at cooking nutritious meals on a budget. During that wonderful stage of my life I was able to travel across the country a few times and live in more than 3 different states. I saw amazing landscapes and met some great people. At least one of those years my income was less than $10,000.00, which is well below the poverty level. I did not want for anything, and did not long for stupid useless shit I didn't need.
I feel I treated others with kindness and respect during that time and continue to do so even though I am now living more or less a conventional American lifestyle. Life if not about how much money you make.

A lot of hippies in Ashbury in the 60's came from super rich baby boomer parents.

She was ok, pretty typical. Personality weighs heavily on looks for me. I guess she was just too uptight for my taste
