Is this panaeolus conctulus or a galerina
    #19409098 - 01/12/14 04:41 PM (10 years, 18 days ago)

I found a medium sized mushroom in rotted wood i think it might be psychedelic but I fear it is a similarly looking and poisonous galerina or other  poisonous small brown mushroom

Welcome to the shroomery. You have got the wrong forum brother.

You want the hunting and identification forum.

Your picture won't load.

If it was growing from wood it is not P. cinctulus more properly known as
P. subbalteatus (for now anyway).

Get better pictures and hopefully a mod will move this for you soon.

And if there is even a 1% chance it could be galerina chuck it. Cyclic octapeptides will more than ruin ur day.

P. subbalteatus is probably nomen dubium, the description could be referring to an inky cap for all we know and the type is really old & I bet it would be hard to impossible to get much from it...
While P. cinctulus has a supposedly good/detailed drawing (According to Gerhardt) & his epitype is documented very well.

That's good to know Byrain. Thanks.

Gets a bit annoying with the preferred name being changed so often.

Oh well. There are worse things.

The name change was only someone jumping the gun and then being really stubborn on MO...

Really, we're going to need to find/see the P. cinctulus iconotype (drawing) and look at the P. subbalteatus type before we know which name is truly the best.  In the meantime I think Gerhardt made a pretty convincing argument for P. cinctulus & it would be a shame to disregard his great work with the epitype.

Thanks Alan.  I think Gerhardt was right, it even shows the broad cheilocystidia, oblique germ pore & zonate caps.  Certainly more compelling than the Agaricus subbalteatus description at mycobank which manages to say its closely allied to A. cinctulus, C. micaceus & grooved like Agaricus hiascens (=Coprinellus hiascens).

I don't think the 1791 drawing shows any cheilocystidia or spores.  Since a microscope is needed to separate Panaeolus cinctulus from P. fimicola, I am not sure which species the 1791 drawing is of.

Alan scroll down, there are two drawings.

Edit:  Actually, is that a newer drawing?

Edit2:  This is cool!

"Panaeolus atrobaleatus Pegler & Henrici si distingue per le spore più piccole (8,5-11 x 6-7,5 µm) e per la presenza di tonalità oliva nel pattern cromatico del rivestimento pileico (PEGLER & HENRICI, 1998)."

Does not look like it was from 1791 to me.

The filenames also imply that the micro drawing is not from the original description.

Yea, I saw that, I guess you are right.  I wonder where its from?  I noticed a lot of stuff I need to find in the bibliografia...
