Light + Water + Naked Eye = Microscope?

Discovery Scenario:
I first noticed this strange phenomenon when I was much younger and long before I ever experimented with psychedelics or any drugs at all for that matter. I was probably 13 and at the time and I was attending school at Valley Forge Military Academy (yes you can attend military school at the age of 13, ridiculous I know.) It was very early in the A.M. and our company officers woke up us for an surprise company drill. It was raining out, cold and dark. We ran outside, got into formation and proceeded to stand at attention for a half an hour doing absolutely nothing.(standard plebe hazing technique)
Phenomenon:
OK, so at this point I'm standing outside in the cold rain, in the dark of early morning, perfectly still. I didn't mind any of this though because I was more than preoccupied with watching the tiny interactions of microbes in the rain drops that were hanging from my the brim of my marching hat. What?! While standing there very still that morning I noticed that if I blurred my vision, while simultaneously focusing on the light reflected through a rain drop (light from a near by light post), I could see the tiny organisms that were either living in my eye or in the rain drops hanging in front of my eye. I've been able to replicate this strange phenomenon many times since then. It just takes un-focusing your vision, while still focusing your vision (hard to explain) on a reflection of light through water (looks like an orb of light, image below). The closer you are to where the light is reflecting through the water the better it works. Inversely, the closer you get the easier it is to block out the light source if you're watching on an object that isn't opaque. Ive been able to do it off a beach ball, a jar of water and many other objects but the best instance ever was that rainy morning with a suspended water drop directly in front of my eye.
I would love to hear what you guys have to say about this strange phenomenon
orbs of light look like this:

Edit: It doesn't need to be a reflection of light through water. Observing light reflecting off any object from a close distance will work but it seems to me that water droplets have a much more lively micro environment and reflect light the best for this type of observation!

If you suspend a drop of water and point a laser through it you can project the magnified image onto a wall. Same thing

The picture you posted looks like what is called bokeh.
This should give a general idea of what bokeh is, since it is a strange phenomenon.
I experience it all the time, especially while tripping at night. I have found on one particular walk at night on LSD, that many Christmas lights and other light sources often fade into the bokeh orbs.
There is also a phenomenon of the "eye floaties" that I get and a lot of other people I know get. The fluid in your eye actually magnifies microscopic particles that get stuck in there, and they can be seen since they are so close to the eye. I see these floating things regularly, and I think it is a regular phenomenon. This is all in layman's terms, but I hope it will suffice!
