Do you believe in restriction of antibiotics? Their overuse effects everyone, and as such will make them useless within the next 100 years.
That's why they make new ones but I don't think they should be routinely given to healthy animals. Which practice has nothing to do with protecting humans from disease as you seem to think.

Nobody is making new ones. Pharmaceutical companies have essentially stopped R&D on new antibiotics because there is not enough profit in them and government spending cuts means not much is going on in the public sector. Let down by the free market once again.

you're expecting hundreds? when there's dozens of products on the market that are effective what's the point in developing dozens more the next day?

Ten years ago there would have been a dozen new antibiotics per year. And the point is that these effective products are losing their effectiveness.

Nope http://www.centerwatch.com/drug-information/fda-approved-drugs/year/2003
Not 1995 either http://www.centerwatch.com/drug-information/fda-approved-drugs/year/1995
All that information was available at the link I provided which you didn't bother to study. Lazy.

Absolutely. That's why there needs to be continual development of novel products, but that has nearly stopped:
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-03-19/health/ct-met-antibiotics-pipeline-20130319_1_drug-resistant-tuberculosis-resistant-bacteria-ketek
Quote:
"The market for a new antibiotic is very small, the rewards are not there and so the capital is not flowing," said Paul Stoffels, pharmaceuticals head at Johnson & Johnson. "In cancer, people pay $30,000, $50,000 or $80,000 (per patient) for a drug, but for an antibiotic it is likely to be only a few hundred dollars."
In December, Stoffels' company won regulatory approval for a new treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis — a growing issue in many countries. But Johnson & Johnson is not developing any more antibiotics.
Pfizer, once the leader in antibiotics research and development, closed its dedicated center in Connecticut in 2011, to the dismay of many scientists. The company now focuses its anti-bacterial work on vaccines.
Others to have quit include Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Eli Lilly, leaving only a handful of firms like GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Merck & Co. in the game. But with basic research providing few new leads for drug targets, they are finding it tough.
Facing difficult decisions about where to invest, AstraZeneca on Monday said it would put less money into developing anti-infectives. "We have to make choices, and we have to focus our investments where we think we can make a substantial difference," CEO Pascal Soriot said.
The number of new systemic antibiotics approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has plunged from 16 between 1983 and 1987 to just two in the past five years, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

I thought you said here were a dozen in 2004?
If there is no market there is no market. Do you know what a market is otherwise called? Demand. We have adequate antibiotics for almost everything. And, like I said earlier, you don't want to pay for anything. You want other people to pay.

the market for cancer drugs is small in comparison to antibiotics, where they dont make a profit by the pill they do make it in volume, the small market for some drugs is what results in huge prices, it pays for the R&D for that drug

Get your head out of your ass. We need more antibiotics. A free market approach is not appropriate for healthcare.
