Five gallon bucket grows?
    #19396510 - 01/09/14 11:25 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Curious. When you all do the five gal bucket with oysters does the sub ever shrink in the bucket leaving a gap around the bucket?

I'm doing a Big tea pitcher of oysters now. Oak sawdust with like 50% spawn. The top 1/3 of the pitcher is almost fully colonized while the bottom 1/3 has barely started running yet. I believe this is due to gas exchange because I packed the stuff in there really tight and the only place that is open is the top with the lid on loosely. I was just curious if this is typical behaviour.

I also have lions mane that is doing this in a bottle but not as bad. It also wasn't packed as tight nor is it as tall as the pitcher.'

I can't say for sure but my hunch is that it's too much moisture, not gas exchange issues.  If you mixed the spawn evenly, the bottom parts shouldn't be that far behind at all.  But if you used to much water, it will gravitate toward the bottom and that part will have much more trouble colonizing.

Do you have your holes/x's cut in the sides for it to fruit out of?  Those also serve as gas exchange, so you should.  I always put a hole in the bottom too, in case I put too much water, so any extra can drain out.

Oysters can often overcome, if you let the extra water drain out, but lion's mane is even more sensitive to too much moisture and will start fruiting long before it colonizes water saturated areas.

edit: and to answer your question, yes the sub will shrink in 5g bucket grows but oysters will usually find their way out the holes

you need to get a lot more FAE into the bucket drill holes in the sides and the bottom to get the air flowing and within a week or so the bucket should be colonized.

I used OICU812's moisture calculator for my sub and there was NO water at the bottom so I don't think it's too wet. I'm pretty sure it's ge. I don't have holes in my containers sooo...:uhoh:

I mean, the pitcher is the main concern right now. It's about 7 inches in diameter and about 12" tall and the only hole is around the loose fitting lid.

My plan was to birth this from the pitcher and fruit like a block.

The lm is doing good though. Especially the quart ziplock bag, which is not as tall as the bottle of lm. The same batch of sub was used on the lm as the oyster so I think the moisture should not be too wet.

But, I have been wrong before.

Nah Solumvita is totally right, if you're moisture is good it's definitely GE

which at this point means that your lower substrate has likely gone anaerobic and may never colonize. You created an environment that favors bacteria over myc Always make the wholes in your container before you add the sub (unless the container is a plastic bag.

I gotcha. The only reason I didn't was because I wasn't planning on fruiting in the container. I will remedy that next time. Hopefully it will colonize but if not I have gained knowledge from this mistake.

Thanks
