Two trays going into fruiting soon - How ready they are!
    #19408221 - 01/12/14 12:47 PM (10 years, 18 days ago)

Hi dear shroomerites!:stoned:

Below are two pics of trays. Each is of an identical isolate of P. cubensis spp. McKennaii. Both were spawned to a pasteurized 50/50 substrate mix of Rooibos mulch and vermiculite (and never forget the 10% of weight Gypsum added!:crazy2:) at a ratio of 1:2.

About 7 days ago both were fully colonized at about the same time. It took them only 7 days to fully colonize from the moment of spawning. Thereafter I abandoned it for a whole week of consolidation (it was the ultimate practice of patience:awesome:).

My question to all the old hands out there is: "Shall I open'em up now let them go crazy?"
:likeaboss:

I truly hope it is time.

Peace!
:mushroom2:

It's time to fruit it, but I doubt it'll go crazy. Mulch isn't good for Cubensis.

Perhaps, but Rooibos is unique. A shrubby tea bush that grows indigenous to where I am. So it is basically woody, but full of beneficial elements, but absent of Magnesium and caffeine fortunately. How can peat moss be better or not equal?

So it gets mulched down to a fine woody substance. But let's see! :ganja:

Yea Id like to see how they turn out so post up some pix if ya can before they get picked. Cubes grow good on all kinds of stuff but the usual around here is Peat/Verm or spawning with Ccco/Verm type deals so its nice to see some new formula used.

Peat moss is only used as a casing layer, not a bulk substrate.

Wood doesn't work well because Cubensis won't eat lignin, and can't break down the hard texture of wood very well. It will work, but your results will likely be piss poor.

I see your point, but then what will serve as "the ideal" substrate for cubies? (Please don't say 'hpoo' as I don't want to go looking for shit in the wrong places... lol).:stoned:

So I suppose straw is also out then? Just curious as I saw someone else pimpin' their substrate out with it. And wood chips:eek:

I will definitely keep you all posted on any changes that occur :stoned: with pics of course. We also have the bricks of peat coir/coco peat/coco coir here, as well as peat moss, in bags, at the nurseries, but I don't want to go with the obvious just yet. I have had fair results with Rooibos+Verm as substrate before, with trays that took longer to colonize, wasn't consolidated, and sometimes had green mold right from the start. So that is why I have a good feeling about these two... And I am all for new formulas/substrates and experimenting, and thus eventually contributing to mycology what I can. And the Rooibos mulch is cheap and abundant here. And unique to our terra firma, making it really interesting...:sexymeow:

I suppose with time I will be visiting local equine farms for some horse poo, but I am not too keen on working with it, except if the results are exceptional/worth it.:cookiemonster:

Nice going Doc! That looks kinda like Amazonian! What strain is it?:fonda:

And btw, I didn't "case" my trays... You must've meant going bulk trays instead of cakes. Which I enjoy, although it is more risky, putting more of your eggs in one basket...:stoned:

No, they do well on straw actually. Wheat straw is best IME.

Really? Cool! A colleague gave me some substrate comprised of wheat straw, poplar wood chip and bran, which he sterilised, so I added spawn to it in front of the flow hood. I am glad to know now that that tray will kick ass.
I will also be visiting horse farms for aged horse poo in the field... thorough research has shown that it is best apparently.

So I will be mixing up the horse poo and some straw next time, as well as adding a hint of Rooibos, for extra luuuuuvvv...:2girls1cup:

Below are two pics of what the Rooibos bush and processed Rooibos looks like
