I understand it only takes 2 but how could less be better?

By the very nature of how the spores branch out and link together to form the mycelium it would seem to me that (for the same volume of water) more spores => more opportunities for these branches to occur => faster colonization time.

I mean for an agar plate I could see why too much could be unnecessary but for pf jars?  I would think the faster you can make things happen the less chance there is for contams to sneak in.

I'm still inexperienced though so this is merely a hypothesis based on what I understand about the biology of fungus.

More spores = more competing strains. Sure, your jar might colonize faster, but isn't your goal to get mushrooms? All those strains competing will slow everything down/fuck things up once you go to try to get a pinset.

Oohh really?  So is that another reason its better to start with LC in jars? (besides the fact that the mycelial formation stage is already complete)

Who the hell said that LC is better?

It's best to start on agar for many reasons.

I mean it's better to use LC on BRF jars than using spores haha.
and I was figuring based on what you said about too many spores creating competing strains, you may shoot 1,000 spores between 4 holes on a jar vs creating an LC from a small squirt of maybe 100 thus less competing strains...?

I think even most noobs know that Agar is better than LC if just for the simple fact that you can easily spot contams.

But it's still not. LC is too unreliable.

That's not how it works. They create one organism, and you're still gonna get a fuckload of strains competing.

If you have to use LC, inoculate it with an agar wedge.

Ok I'm starting to get it.

So there's not really any reason I would need to make an LC really is there?

I mean if I have the means to do Agar and pasteurize grain then I could just kinda forget all about LC's huh?

You sterilize grain, not pasteurize but yeah you pretty much got it.

Oh i thought only the pf jars and agar could be sterilized, I had read somewhere that due to the nature of the grains it was impossible to kill all the microorganisms and spores in it so the best you could ever do is pasteurize.

You can overcook the grain too can't you?

Grain, agar, cakes, etc are sterilized. Bulk substrates are pasteurized.

You can overcook your grain while hydrating, but you can't over-sterilize as long as you're not getting water from your PC into your jars. The worst that happens is your PC can run out of water and warp or crack the jars.

AHA!  Ok cool, god  I learn so much from everyone on this site, I can't wait til I'm experienced enough to pass on some of this knowledge to others that need it.

So once I have a colonized plate of Agar I would want to sterilize a jar of grain (if I have large bags with filter patches from Outgrow could this serve the same purpose as the jar?), throw a slice or two in there (hehe like tiny pizza) and let it do it's thing, then pasteurize some bulk and mix all that up into a monotub once the grain spawn is colonized riiiight?

You could, yeah, but you'd do better to colonize a jar from your agar then G2G that into your bag. Colonization would end up much faster.

Sweeeet, could I colonize a small jar like a half pint or pint of grain to G2G the bag?

I mean I know it doesn't take much and I've got the world's smallest pressure cooker to work with here lolol.

anyone know how to store LC for best shelf life?

seems mine always die after 2½-4 months, honey LC :-(

always store in refriderator, that seems to be max shelf life for me

I want a LC that will last a year... maybe put wood into it? like we do with slants?
would that work?

Sweeet!  Now I can put off buying a bigass pressure cooker! Haha

And to mil, I could have sworn that I heard somewhere that LC can be frozen it just takes off very very slowly once thawed out.

Either that or I believe there is an LC  to LC  transfer teK on here somewhere where you suck up a syringe worth of viable LC and put it into fresh medium to give it more food.

Of course there's a lot of info on here I read years ago that has since been disputed/disproven...

You could just make slants to store and throw together your LC as needed.

or you could skip the LC process and be quicker and more clean and avoid having to test out your LC by keeping slants, petris, agar around. with cubes LC is like taking a road trip from maine to flordia and stopping in california to get gas that makes your car go twice as fast
